Poor Flash video playback since version 13

Recommended Posts

I noticed this in Opera stable (version 20) but it could potentially be the same for Chrome and Firefox.

Simply put, Flash video playback is terrible. As much as I'd like to switch to the HTML5 player in YouTube, there's a current active issue between YouTube and Opera that is blocking the HTML5 player, so the browser insists on using the Flash player.

I can't reproduce this in IE11, since over there it automatically uses HTML5 which plays beautifully well.

Flash playing OK in Firefox, here.

I haven't noticed any Flash crash on my Android/Chrome.

I see now, Flash isn't installed on the Android.

I had the same problem when I installed it and found the answer was to disable flash players Hardware Acceleration. It seemed to help fix the problem for me.

I saw the update yesterday come across my computer, i have not had a chance to do any full testing on it however, at the same time i have yet to be able to find a full changelog to see what they did.

It's the other way around over here, flash works great and html5 on youtube is a nightmare(clicking in middle of video makes it start from beginning instead of that point D: )

You can force HTML5 on YouTube, e.g. the YouTube Center script. Regarding HTML5 and Opera, it probably lacks H.264/H.264+MSE support like Chromium does. As far as I know, currently Chrome and Maxthon are the only browsers that support the HTML5 video codecs (e.g. WebM and H.264) and Media Source Extensions for those codecs. Meaning you can get 480p and above support with the HTML5 player with all supported videos.
