evalverde
I have followed the "usual" way to build a pooled VDI desktop using Win7 or Win8 with success, but it fails when I use an image of Win Server 2012 as VM instead.Am I overlooking something? Should I need to prepare the image in a different way? (Sysprep differently?)Thanks goretsky 1 Share
McDave
I believe that VDI is designed for providing client desktop environments over and therefore does not support server editions of windows.
Marshalus Veteran Posted May 16, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 16, 2014 What do you mean by the "usual" way?
+John Teacake MVC Posted May 17, 2014 MVC Share Posted May 17, 2014 Yeah Hence the name Virtual DESKTOP Infrastructure. If you want to host Server OS then use ESXi or Hypervisor etc. Move along here, Nothing to see...
Marshalus Veteran Posted May 18, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2014 Actually, because of the way that Microsoft does licensing for Windows Desktop inside of a virtual environment it's not uncommon to see Windows Server acting as a desktop operating system in these environments. ESXi, Xen or Hyper-V is still the hypervisor (depending on the technology implementation.) While it's not the standard, I know for a fact it's supported by VMware View. Most of Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp is backed by Windows Server as well. The foundation of VDI on Hyper-V is Windows Server. Using Windows Server 2008 R2 as a desktop operating system in VMware Horizon View (2057605) http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2057605 http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xendesktop-7/cds-sys-requirements.html http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/virtual-desktop-infrastructure/default.aspx#fbid=3C92G_TQcVs Hence, why I asked how the original implementation was done. Microsoft RDS, XenDesktop or VMware View (or something else...) Many ways to skin the VDI cat.
