Truman
Don't you mean System Idle Process ? That shows how much of the CPU its not using.

iUk
I've had a similar problem on XP Home. It was related to installing an HP CD writer. It was messing up because there was a CD in the new drive, and when XP started up, it seemed to try too much and load up the CD and show that helpful box with tasks for the CD's files. Showing that box, along with loading the system seemed to be too much. If you have any CD's in any drives, try taking them out and re-booting... iUk
Truman
Hmm...sounds like explorer has crashed and all you are left with is the backdrop. Have you tried booting from the xp cd and repairing the installation ?
