Windows 8.1U1 High CPU

Recommended Posts

Is anyone who has upgraded to Windows 8.1 Update 1 noticing random but regular periods of heavy CPU load after upgrading?

I have. It's short periods but happens when doing a bunch of nothing..

Is the Settings Sync process continuously in use?  I had to use the MS account diagnostic thingy to fix that.

could be that it's reindexing as well. how long has it been going on?

About 2 weeks. Since I updated. If it stays high long enough I'll eventually catch it in Task Manager.. It's regularly intermittent for short periods, not constant. I notice it because I have a silent PC and prior to the update, I rarely had the CPU under enough load to make the fan audible outside of gaming. Now it's somewhat regular, though in very short bursts.

I haven't noticed high cpu usage. I've noticed it telling me my laptop with 4GB of RAM is OoM off and on though since upgrading.

I have 16GB and though I want more (for VMs), 8.x is much more efficient IME, than 7. They're indicating they will give it an even smaller footprint, that should be exciting. 'bout time software started catching up to hardware ;>

have you noticed it w/ the hard drive instead of the CPU? I'm seeing a seemingly-common problem w/ ntoskrnl.exe where that process uses 100% of my disk (according to task manager) and it really slows down my machine.

it sounds like 8.1 is working out well for us all in random ways

Well hey once I figured out that thing.  I occasionally switch my non Unicode language to Japanese and this (8 and up) is the first time it's really messed with the OS heh.

It has been happening to me as well, and has also spiked up my hard disk usage also. :/

Some of the spikes are from the anti-malware service, but I have not been installing or updating anything when it runs. It comes up at least 3-5 times a day during use.
