Where to start with all of this?

Recommended Posts

So, I've been interested in building computers for a while now, or, at the very least, just interested in the hardware of the computer, how it works, etc..., but I just came to a moment of self-realization to the fact that I really don't know that much "advanced" knowledge on the various pieces of hardware associated with computers (graphics cards, processors, etc...). This is a somewhat vague question, but where should I start? I know the basics of computers, I just want to know where I can get more knowledge without it completely overwhelming me. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies with helpful suggestions.

You could probably start with Wikipedia to learn the individual parts and current technologies like SATA, the different CPU sockets, types of RAM, etc.

Here are some relatively up to date build guides that you might find helpful also:

Once you get into picking your parts, I'd recommend pcpartpicker.com, as it automatically makes sure they all work together (plus, you can check out other people's builds for inspiration :D)

Yeah, I've used PcPartPicker a lot for creating theoretical builds, etc... I'm ok on the various parts themselves, its the advanced knowledge that I seek, but that's actually related to servers/programming, etc... Thanks for all the help though. My friend Mastercoms knows a whole lot about this stuff too.
