Looking for software to control internet access

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking for an application or software that would allow me to control internet access for devices connected to my router. For example I have 4 devices connected, If for some reason I don't want device number 2 using internet at the time I decide, I can then block them from accessing it and re-enable it when I want them to have access again. I have tried searching but cant seem to word it correctly and get completely different things.

Can anyone please help?

If you want it at the router level, it would have to be done by the router.  You may want to see if your router has the ability to kick and block the users computer, mac filtering would be enough to disable temporarily.  you could setup priority for your computer so that your computer has more bandwidth allotted to it vs the other computers..that would be known as qos and most, if not all, routers have that.

What router do you have? chances are your router might support this natively, that would be the easiest way to achieve what you want to do.

For example on my Asus RT-N16 running the Tomato firmware i have the following options:

I could create multiple access restrictions depending on the mac address / ip address of the device on my network.

The router supports this but that would be a long process to always log into the router homepage and turn it off or on. I asm asking this for a friend who has kids going on sites they shouldnt be going on at night, and he wants to switch off their internet access as soon as catches them.

then use k9 or opendns to filter unwanted sites.

If it is windows or mac, k9 works great, but if it is tablets, it is better to use opendns and there is nothing to install on the local computers with opendns.  k9 is nice because it doesn't matter where the device is at, it is protected as it is loaded on the computer.  opendns is great because you don't have to load it on any computer but if you are brining it off site to another location (someones house or school for examples) it isn't protected at all unless they have their own web filter on site.

I use opendns

you just set the dns on that one computer to look at the opendns server and then use their dashbaord to block what you need
