first look at Dell P2815Q

Question

Posted

Ok so I just plugged this bad boy into my ati 6950 and it's ok...

The good :

1) I love the colors, it's a beautiful TN panel. Side to side viewing angle is good. Up and down isn't great but the stand is so adjustable that it works out great.

2) Text is so sharp! I have never looked at so many excel cells in one view. it's amazing for those of us that need massive spreadsheets in front of us.

3) I got ride of my other monitors. this beauty is like 4 x 1080s. my desktop loves me.

here is the catch....

i am REALLY noticing the 30hz thing... I guess I have never not had 60 and 30 on such a high res screen is way noticeable. Factors that contribute:

1) You have to make your mouse move around faster so you can get around the large display. Faster and 30hz just looks terrible and feels laaaaggggy.

2) because everything is so large, closing a full sized window takes a good second. at 30hz you really see that thing lagging.

.....

Please tell me about your experience. I am close to returning this thing and waiting for a decent 60hz 4k with a nice, adjustable stand.

Man, return it - thats not a "bad boy" -  its a bad 4K imposter designed to fool people into thinking they can get decent 4K for less than $3500 @ 28"

Get a U2715, or ASUS PA289 for 2560x1440 res & wait.  (just got the 27" ASUS @ 2560x1440 - pretty amazing)

Just my opinion though - I didnt know there was such thing as a "beautiful TN panel" - or am I thinking of another abbreviation for led tech ?

I take you meant the U2713H?  I was looking at the UP2414Q but it's a 4K IPS 8bit + dithering (My U2410 is a normal 10bit) plus the whole MST and scalar issues are keeping me away, I will wait until the 4k panels are SST.  That and I do not want to pop down $2000 to $3000 for dual or triple SLI Titan Blacks to run 4K games at high or ultra settings.

I know that Asus Gync is coming in a month or two, but it's also a "premium TN" panel.  At least it's 8bit with no dithering, but not sure, the U2713H looks like my best bet as I love the Premier Color U2410 I have, just want higher resolution.  My friend has the U2713H and it's gorgeous for playing games on.  It's just a larger and higher resolution of my U2410.

To the OP, did you consider the UP2414Q? I know it's 4" smaller, but on Display Port 1.2 it can get 60hz at native resolution using MST.  The only way to scale this monitor to lower resolution is to kick it into SST to get 1080p or 1440p at 60hz without it being a tiny picture on the screen.  This whole issue with 4K's using dual panels with dual tcons to run 60hz is keeping me away from the for now.  The MST modes do not have a scaler so they are stuck at to fill the entire screen.

I did... didn't know what the extra $300 was going to get me. I am returning it. It's just not worth it.

The 28" is a 30hz TN panel and the 24" is a 60hz over displayport 1.2 IPS panel. That's the difference in price.

I decided I am going to get the U2713H late this month, 4k with dual tcons is just not worth it plus the cost of gaming at 4k with high or max settings is a bit much for me.

Asus with their upcoming 8bit TN 28" Gysnc TN panel wants you to compute that.

There are some really good TN panels out there that aren't as washed out colour wise as other TN monitors, I too don't think the 30Hz thing is worth it, unless you're doing something other than gaming, the cost is too much for me to justify or even afford too xD

just my 2c. the whole 30Hz thing is pretty overblown. Yes, i do notice the slight lag on my Seiki, but it's just fine for video and everyday use.

gaming on the other hand... well, it's acceptable at 30Hz, but ive found 1st person games to be quite difficult. I did play, and finish, MoH: Warfighter using it, but i wouldnt suggest someone play multi.

where gaming @ 30Hz would be just fine are non-twitch games, like... splinter cell, or some RTS.

yea but unless they've done something revolutionary it'll still be pretty ###### in colour reproduction despite being 8 bits. Just because you increase the number of bits doesn't mean it can actually show the colours very well. IPS has always been known for accuracy rather than sheer range.

It's why I stick to the IPS panels, I prefer the color reproduction and I honestly do not notice the lag, but I also do not really play FPS either.
