Got the original Bliss wallpaper in .tiff and edited it in Lightroom to something that looks more realistic and calm.

Well, you can customize the desktop just like Windows 7.

Desktop mods peaked with WinXP and has been tapering off ever since.

The thread is titled, "May 2014 Desktops", which doesn't limit posting to only Windows desktops.

How so?  In Windows 8 you can still change the style, icons, add all sorts of extra bling like docks, widgets, launchers, meters, etc etc, even change the shell outright... just like in XP.  Most of the time using the same software even.

That said, on my day to day machines, last time I actually had a desire for that sort of fluff was way back in the early XP days.. well except the visual style anyway, have yet to find an OS with a look that I liked out of the box.  I don't go for that sort of junk on my *Nix desktops either. Rarely even see the desktop anymore, too busy actually using the thing.  Don't even use Rainmeter anymore, got an LCD panel for that, don't need to minimize anything to see it.  This one I'm sitting at is still 7, on the to-do to get updated, most of the rest already are.  Just the center monitor, scaled way down as it's just a simple desktop anyway.  Just the stock Aero, got rid of those blue toolbars, squared, added a blue shadow al-la KDE, just because.   Everything else is pretty much stock except for ClassicShell's start menu since I can add a bunch of extra directories to the right side.  Don't need fancy launchers anymore as a few custom jumplists do all that I need now.  That's all subjective of course, if you want to pile on a ton of extra fluff you still can.

If you were around in the days of WinXP, you would have seen a couple hundred desktop posts a month. Today there is very few a month.
