HP N54L - Win Server or simpler option?

I'm currently running Windows Server 2012 R2, but have been using it for basic backups. I wondering if that's overkill and if I should use something simpler and resource-intensive, such as freeNas?

FreeNAS certainly would be simpler.  Are you only really using the device as a NAS?

Yes, at least for now.

 

I have an old laptop hooked up to my tv for netflix and such.
