Windows terminal server remote app issues

Recommended Posts

I am having  an issue. I have a ms 2008 server that i use as a terminal server for remote users. I have published applications so users just have an icon on their desktop and only see the application.

My issue is with 1 user. The programs works fine but when she hit file -> print nothing happens. She does not get the print options window. When i use the remote control function from the ts it brings up her app and I see the print window. it is right on top. So she can see me remote controlling her session but she cant see the print window that i am hitting print on.

are there any graphics settings that would be affecting this? I cant see it being a permission issue. When i use her login from my computer it works fine.

thanks in advance for any help

Very possible if it is only happening to one user that it is profile related.  I would delete her profile and have windows recreate it.

sc302 he beat me to it! Profile-reset is very likely to help.

It's certainly not unusual with Citrix seamless apps to launch off of the visible deskop, especially if the user uses a mix of monitor resolutions.  The Print dialogue is 'modal' which makes the old right-click, Move then arrow-keys trick impossible to use I think.

I've seen issues like this before.

  1. What is the remote application, its plausible the application isn't compatible.
  2. Does this one user, only use this printer?
  3. Try a different resolution on the client side.
  4. Make sure the TS Session is getting closed out before testing again.  Could just be a messed up TS Session needing a good log out (reset, log off, shutdown -l).
  5. Is it using Easy Print Services as the Driver? If it is, use GPEdit.msc to disable Easy Print Services as the first choice.  This will require you to install the printer driver locally.  This assumes the default printer is a redirected printer.  Easy Print Services has a slew of issues, I rarely use it.  However not using it, sometimes won't translate user specific settings such as mailboxes (due to the redirected printer getting destroyed after each connect).  In those instances, I've needed to use Local Printers installed on the TS Server to work around issues.
  6. What is the default printer on the TS Server when the client connects?
  7. Are you trying to "print" to an application specific printer, such as a Document Imaging Type printer (Ie; Fax Printers, PDF Printers, etc) ?  These don't work well in TS RemoteApp Environments, where the print dialog may not appear on the client side (due to easy print services).  Recommended to use these as Local Printers in the RemoteApp.

To be fair I have always had great luck with universal print services vs printing through terminal services. Not as many screwed up printing issues, far less drivers I need to install on my server farms to be able to maintain drivers of all of the individual printers out there (lots of home/remote users to support). You install the service and that is the last print driver you ever have to worry about.

I have used uniprint and screwdrivers in the past

Both work very well in the citrix and msts/rdp server environments.

I wasn't aware those work very well when you need to use the advanced settings of large production printers.  Small HP's sure.

Here is the thing with uniprint, it sends it as a pdf to your local client and your computer prints the pdf as you need it.

What are we talking large production printers, a large copier like a Ricoh Aficio MP C7501?  Or are we talking about a large format printer like a plotter? The ricoh or canon image runners I have not had an issue with printing to, they can all staple as well as hole punch if needed.  Most were legal documents due to traveling mortgage reps. I haven't tried on a plotter, don't have the environment for it either.

You can set the options on your local computer of how you want it to print because your client comes up with a second print dialog, in this second print dialog you can change the printer to print to as well as the print settings to what you want the printer to do (color, b&w, collate, staple, hole punch, etc).  I am very familiar with uniprint and how it functions, less so on the functionality of screwdrivers.

wow thanks for all the quick feedback.

The only reason i haven't redone her profile is because i can use her profile on my computer and it works fine. I will relook into that now.

will try resolution

she is using easyprint. that has caused a ton of issues for us in the past.

default is her printer

just a normal printer

In case anyone runs across this.

I changed the profile and nothing changed.

I got rid of the easy print printer and still had issues.

changed the monitor resolution nothing.

Ran full windows updates which included a new video card driver and it fixed it.

thanks for the help. can this thing be marked as solved. im not sure how to do that.
