Eset Smart Security and startup/system performance.

Question

Hi,

I was very fortunate to get a copy of ESET Smart Security from a generous friend here on Neowin but I've been having an issue since day one and I have gone through all the settings and can't seem to remedy it.

First my startup time, that is from the time I login and reach an active desktop, has more than doubled. I turned off all the auto scans at startup as ESET recommends but it barely helped. Also when compared to other Security software my system responsiveness has highly decreased. Many AV review sites recommend ESET as one of the lightest Security Suites on the market.

Does anyone use it who can give me some pointers on either how to lighten the load on it or something else that will work less taxing on resources? I can't understand why it has such an impact as I am running an I7 processor and 16G of Corsair vengeance memory and on a Samsung SSD.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

Generally, when I see a newly-installed anti-malware program behaving slowly, my first thought is that it is conflicting with some remnant of the previously-installed anti-malware software which got leftover after it was uninstalled.

My suggestion would be as follows:

  1. download a fresh copy of ESET Smart Security
  2. download a fresh copy of ESET's manual uninstaller tool
  3. download a fresh copy of the uninstaller tool for your previously installed anti-malware program
  4. uninstall ESET Smart Security via Control Panel (or Uninstall program listed under Start Menu|Programs)
  5. reboot in Safe Mode and run ESET manual uninstall tool to remove any leftover remnants of ESET's software
  6. reboot in Safe Mode a second time and run manual uninstall tool for previously-installed anti-malware program to remove any remnants of other anti-malware software
  7. restart computer as normal
  8. perform clean install of ESET Smart Security

If you are still having problems after that, well, I'm not sure.  It could be a conflict between something other than ESET and old security software.  At that point, I would suggest using the support form on their web site to contact them, or giving their support a call toll-free at +1 (866) 343-3738, depending upon whether you prefer typing or talking to support.

Will do, thanks so much!

Ok, one thing I noticed off the bat is I was running the 32 bit version on wind 8.1 x64. I don't know if that matters.

Hello,

My understanding is that the 64-bit version of ESET's software is a mixture of 32-bit and 64-bit components.  I recall reading an article in their knowledgebase about how that worked, but can't seem to find it.

Ahh, that makes sense as I ran "Syspec" a program that checks files for both 32-bit and 64-bit code and the files in the Eset install folder came up both, I don't know enough about the two to know why. I do know several people who develop software have said Eset;s "64-Bit" version is a misnomer as it works on the same level as the 32-Bit version with nothing optimized for 64-Bit Operating Systems.

Anyway I had no luck with a re-install or when using the Eset removal tool first before a re-install. Keep in mind I do make extreme changes to the default settings so I don't know if there are any issues with that.

I finally gave up and restored Windows. Eset Smart Security is back on and re-configured and running nicely.

Thanks for the help.

(BTW, see my other post about a question I have with regards to my other system)

Check in settings under real time protection that advanced heuristics are turned off, it should be by default. I have a high end machine but having advanced heuristics enabled in real time makes it almost grind to a halt. It should only really be enabled for scheduled scans.

Hello,

Glad the problem is solved.

Troubleshooting anti-virus software is one of those areas where I really like to work with tech support.  The software operates at such a low-level and there are so many different variables, combined with the software being updated daily, means you really want to speak with someone who's on top of all that in order to fix things.
