Windows 8.1 Update 1 will not install on new computer

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

So I've been running my new build for a day now and I finally end up being bothered to install 8.1 Update 1...

Anyway, I've tried so many times now but to no avail.

Every time it downloads successfully, "prepares for installation" successfully and then says "Installing update" for around 10 minutes. Then it fails with error code 70080002. Every time.

I have restarted the computer so many times and deleted the contents of DataStore and Download in the Windows/SoftwareDistribution folder countless times. It still won't download... its so frustrating as I'm on <3Mb/s internet so it takes ages to download each time and then it fails.

Any suggestions?

Internet not proving to be incredibly helpful on this one and I'm getting rather frustrated.

Did you install Windows 8.1 through the store? Update 1 has been combined with that, so if you've recently installed 8.1 through the store, you should be good to go.

Also, can you verify the error code? Searching only resulted for error code 80070002, which looks to be an issue with temp files. -> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-error-80070002#1TC=windows-7

No I installed 8.1 from a DVD using a KMS product key... then I used Change product key to enter my 8.0 one.

Maybe I should have just installed 8.0 first and then gone to the store then... only installed 8.1 from CD with KMS to save time...

Give the help file a try and see if that works for you to get the update going.

If you already have 8.1 installed, get the standalone update installer...then at least if you have to restart multiple times you won't have to re-download everything every time.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335

Clear your %TEMP% folder and restart before running the update.

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log, while not exactly user-friendly, may contain enough hints to get you to look at other things the error code isn't telling you.  *If* you can, delete it before launching the update installer.  Sometimes the system will keep a lock on it--at the very least, try to do it from an elevated prompt.  If you can't, it's no big deal, it's just more clutter to sift through--pay attention to the date and time.

Oh, and here's the recommended install order (all these files are at the download link above) .  #2 is the biggie.  If one update succeeds, you don't have to restart from the beginning.

1.  KB2919442
2.  KB2919355
3.  KB2932046
4.  KB2937592
5.  KB2938439
6.  KB2949621

Make sure you try the suggestions in this article:

https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-offers-two-windows-81-update-install-fixes-but-problems-remain

Specifically, this part:

?Run CMD as administrator (Go to start screen, all apps, search CMD, right-click and select run as administrator)
?Enter: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
?When step 2 has completed, enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
?Retry the update!

Even though you did a new install, it may still help.

Also see this dos command in Windows 8

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Essentially Run this

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

It will check for any corruption of currently installed updates which may prevent installation of future / newer updates.

A quick <ahem> update (no pun intended :)) on the situation...

I have downloaded the standalone files as recommended above.

I have run the following commands, both of which went successfully:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

I have deleted everything in my TEMP folder and cleared out the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download folder again.

I have now restarted my computer and am attempting to install the update (KB2919355) again using the standalone installer... I tried it before running the commands and it failed.

So far the progress bar hasn't moved (still at 0) and it says "Initialising installation... done! Installing Update for Windows (KB2919335) (update 1 of 1)..."

I really hope this will work.

"The following updates have not been installed: KB2919335"

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

What else can I do???

Theres nothing to restore to... its a brand new computer I built myself almost exactly 24 hours ago now. :)

Actually, I guess I could try a refresh...

Its just really strange though because all the other updates installed fine but 8.1 Update 1 although appearing in Windows Update (and it is just it there now - all the others are installed) and downloading properly and even starting the install just terminates with 70080002... and I've followed all Microsoft's advice on this error code but to no avail.

When using the standalone installer it says Installing for around 10 minutes with the progress bar completely empty and then the progress bar goes suddenly almost the entire way across for around 2 minutes... then it cancels.

Try a refresh, and see if you can't download 8.1 from the store. If worse comes to worse, you might need to just re-install.

Would this make a difference I wonder... just noticed in the 'properties' of the standalone updater for KB2919335 that there is that stupid 'unblock' button because it came from the internet... I am now running it after clicking it, wonder if it will affect anything... currently on the empty progress bar bit, not looking good.

FINALLY! After a quick refresh all is fine... KB2919355 is installed! Or restarting and 'configuring' anyway. Just need to install the rest of the components I guess and then reinstall all my programs. Wow I didn't expect to be refreshing my computer a day after building it but hey, that's Windows :)

Judging by your original screenshot it looked like you had a modified theme or a patched uxtheme file. Maybe that was causing the issue.
