Russia will begin Moon colonization in 2030 - draft space program

?We are going to the Moon forever,? the Russian Deputy PM said in April, and it was not just empty words. It appears Russia does plan to colonize the Moon by 2030 and the first stage of the ambitious project may start as soon as two years from now.

That is according to a leaked draft document that Izvestia newspaper claims to have obtained. It was prepared by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Roscosmos federal space agency, Moscow State University and a number of space research institutes.

?Moon is a space object of the future reclamation by Earth civilization, and in XXI century there might be a geopolitical competition for lunar natural resources,? the authors of the draft project state in the opening line.

This is why it is important to focus on creating an arsenal of necessary means in advance, they stress.

?The Moon is not an intermediate point in the race,? Russia?s Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin who is in charge of space and defence industries said back in April. ?This process has the beginning, but has no end. We are going to the moon forever.?

I hope they do. Meanwhile, our **** government will most likely still be here throwing away our chances of doing the same as our kids are forced to learn "alternative science"

I'm more curious to know what resources Russia has...

Russia has quite a lot of money, just doesn't seem so outwardly, or perhaps there's involvement by China that might surface later..

Er... what resources does the moon have?

Helium-3 has been emitted by our sun for billions of years and is carried by solar winds, but Earth has a magnetic field that deflects these particles away, so the only helium-3 found on Earth is from bi-products of nuclear weapons and this is extremely scarce. The Moon however, has been continuously bombarded with helium-3 particles for billions of years. It is estimated that the Moon has an abundance of helium-3 in the region of 1 million tonnes. The estimated price of helium-3 is ?4.5billion per tonne. It is estimated that to power the Earth for a year would only take only 100 tonnes, so we have a potential clean power source for 10,000 years.

1) Russia makes a similar announcement every 3-5 years. Yawn.

2) they need a super-heavy launcher to do the meaningful payloads that a long term base needs. The 40 tonne Heavy version of Angara is still a decade out and their super-heavy proposal just started being written 2 months ago.

3) as of now there is zero budget because all there is are target payload figures fpr the super-heavy. Given how long Angara is taking it won't appear until 2030 to 2035.

4) Gobs of money? No. Russia's main sources of income are oil and gas, and their portion of that market is shrinking as their northern well production tails off. They also have not developed fracking techs to extend their wells lives.

5) the oil market is going through a major distortion that will hit Russia's bank account; by 2015/16 the US takes over as #1 oil & gas producer, and is energy self-sufficient by 2035. Those are international energy agency numbers, not US. Meanwhile, China and India are going full bore nuclear and at the least China plans to electrify its transportation including cars.

I guess technically there isn't anyway to stop them but im surprised anyone can just go ahead and say yep that moon is now mine thanks.

Officially they couldn't do just that. Such acts were banned in the Outer Space Treaty! But that doesn't mean entities are prohibited from planting a base on the Moon (or any body in the Solar System) and then proceeding to 'fence it off' to keep people from nosing around. They could own (and defend I guess) the facility, but the land would technically never be actually theirs unless that Treaty gets modified.

Yep since they want to have a circle jerk.   They want to land people on an asteroid I read recently.  Ok, well how about getting something to replace the shuttle quicker.

Why couldn't Russia, they're close buddies with China, which have similar plans. And have the money to back it up.

China is new to the space race, working together with Russia seems like the most obvious thing to do.

 

EU is trying to invest in ESA more and more. The only ones that are cutting down on their space expenses, is the USA, in favor of a stronger military here on earth.

USA is stupid to think that in 50-100 years, dominating one tiny planet matters.

The moon has all the metals earth has :/ It's a lot easier to explore the rest of our universe then it is from earth with its atmosphere and much stronger gravitational pull.

The sooner all of mankind realises that there can be no greater challenge for our species than exploring new worlds (including our solar system), the sooner we can put away the silly bombs and get on with it!

In a few hundred years we will look back and laugh at these pesky squabbles we have over little pieces of land and resources.

Resources a plenty out there, we don't even need to empty our own home planet. Moon base is just a stepping stone to the rest of our solar system and beyond.

There is intelligent life out there, the sooner we find it, the sooner we as a human race achieve global peace and declare a unified war on them.

Solar Panels are made to get energy, so in theory no energy problems should happen.

 

Regarding water, they can easily connect a tube from earth to moon to provide it. not a big deal.

SpaceX recently said they may do a lunar landing as a demo flight of their Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT).

The Raptor engines components for MCT started testing his month at NASA Stennis, and the DragonRider crew spacecraft (which may foreshadow its lander) gets revealed May 29.

This popped up for about 30 minutes and was pulled. Seems to be DragonRider's new shape being tested in a NASA wind tunnel (image straightened & cropped),
