Zuckerberg's school gift mostly wasted

As Oprah said in her Oprah way, "one ... hundred ... million ... dollars" would be given to Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the three began the Startup:Education foundation.

The plan was to turn Newark into what Zuckerberg called "a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation," spent on retaining the best teachers, and creating environments that would produce successful students and, one day, graduates.

...........

Today, the money is pretty much gone, and Newark has hardly become that symbol of excellence.

This was easy to predict the second it was announced. The problem with schools isn't just funding. Its who is in charge of spending it and what its being spent on. You can't just throw money at the problem and expect anything to change.

you can't throw money at anything tied to political figures and expect it to spent right.....

if he wanted it done right he should of formed a group of his own people and just did it

He should've managed the funding/spending himself not leave that to politicians. I saw a sign on a roundabout near my house that said this area received government funding for improvements to the road. It had total costs at the bottom at $800,000...

$800,000 for a concrete circle (roundabout) with some dirt in the middle with trees? Could've built at least a 100 of those with that type of money I don't think politicians know how much things are supposed to cost.

Would have made more sense to give the money directly to the schools rather than those who failed the schools in the first place.

In the picture it looks like Mark is happy that he's doing good while the other guys are wondering what the weather is like in Antigua at this time of year. :P

no, it's just a round road, two lanes.... that's it.... all their "engineering", "studies", "soil studies" etc somehow add up..... plus they have to buy up a bunch of properties to rip down to build it....

You can throw all the money in the world into a school, but if the parents do not take an active part in their children's education then it is wasted.

For every bad parent there's a school curriculum that concentrates on basic basket weaving, politically correct crap etc. while ignoring essential studies, ejecting kids for having toy soldiers and spending 20% plus of the school hours in mindless assemblies.

Then they buy a new gold plated K-12 curriculum every 2-4 years, totally screwing up the kids for lack of continuity.

Disclosure: wife is a 30+ year seniority teacher maddened by the above.
