Comcast Wants To Put Data Caps On All Customers Within 5 Years

Recommended Posts

Lol data caps and people are whinging.  This is the norm, it's really not an issue.

Since when is this the norm? As far as cable internet is concerned data caps have never been the norm. I have been running Time Warner Cable almost since they started using the name Roadrunner for their internet service, and even back then when it first came out they never had data caps (and still don't).

It may be the norm for mobile phone services where you shouldn't be using tons of data, but it is most definitely not the norm for cable internet....in the US at least.

Think outside your country.  It's not the only one on the planet, buddy.

Those agreements ARE illegal, government does not have the permission to create de facto monopolies, hence why in many states they have been forced to allow electric, gas. and water competition, and guess what, rates go down unless like here in CT the morons in the Gov capped high and low rates so there's actually little real competition

Where do you get this idea that government isn't allowed to create monopolies? Government can, and does, create monopolies all the time... Obviously, they (in theory) try to ensure they don't impose monopolies onto competitive markets, but that can be argued either way depending on the case.

Additionally, Internet is a monopolistic market in the same way electricity is. The deregulation push that hit the electric, and similar, spaces are an attempt to reduce the scope of where monopolies exist in the market due in large part to technology. Even an energy deregulated market, like PA, heavily regulates the monopoly portion of the electrical market (distribution). You can't have 15 different electrical cables running down the street in hopes of reaching a customer...

Now, having a similar market for Internet would be nice. The actual lines being regulated under a utility and you pay separately for this distribution utility than you do for the actual service... Could offer some level of competition for users, but this would be a long and hard fight.

Either way, government can, and does, create monopolies... Sometimes we're better off and sometimes we aren't. Such is life.

My parents got rid of Comcast this past Tuesday and got NineStar as the replacement. :)

I don't get it. Don't you guys have smaller ISPs in your cities? I mean, come on, in a city with 20,000 people we have 4 ISPs back home. Sure they are not perfect, but 10 EUR / month for unlimited 16/8 MB/s is not that bad for a poor country (Macedonia).

Do the rich care? Does this effect negatively the rich in America?

If not, abandon all hope of anything changing. :)

Microsoft should just buy the Xfinity part of Comcast.

Don't get all up-in-arms at me talking specifically about my country in a topic about an ISP that only serves my country. Kinda rude of you don't you think?

Not to mention I did specifically state my info was only pertinent in the US.

Go flame bait somewhere else.

I used to read something about Republican thinking of putting tax on the internet.  Well, this is it.  That is pretty much a tax lol

I will be going over to FiOS soon... Comcast disconnect my service twice now for going over the cap limit... Good-bye stinken greedy bastard....

Also forgot to mention, here in Sweden I currently have free access. 12/12 Mb/s for absolutely nothing. Yes, you read that right.
