A Sudanese court has sentenced a woman to hang for apostasy after she left Islam and married a Christian man.

"We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death," the judge told the woman, AFP reports.

Human rights group Amnesty International condemned the sentence as "appalling and abhorrent".

Local media report the sentence would not be carried out for two years after she has given birth.

Sudan has a majority Muslim population, which is governed by Islamic law. It rules that apostasy - the abandonment of one's religious faith - is a crime.

Western embassies and rights groups had urged Sudan to respect the right of the pregnant woman to choose her religion.

The judge also sentenced the woman to 100 lashes after convicting her of adultery - because her marriage to a Christian man was not valid under Islamic law.

This will reportedly be carried out when she has recovered from giving birth.

Earlier in the hearing, an Islamic cleric spoke with her in a caged dock for about 30 minutes, AFP reports.

Then she calmly told the judge: "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."

A terrible law, you should be able to have your beliefs if you want, but if it is the law of the country then she should have considered her options. Would she have had the option to leave the country to somewhere more accepting?

If you carry on through the article, it does go on to say that death sentences are rarely carried out in Sudan, and that her lawyers are going to go to a higher court to try and get the sentence overturned.

to add more information, for those who might not read the article, she is the daughter of a Muslim father and Christian mother.  Her dad left them when she was young and she was raised a Christian, hence her marrying a Christian man.  In the eyes of Sudan, since her father was a Muslim, she's a Muslim and thus was never allowed to marry a Christian man and so now we are here.  She's in jail right now with a child she already has, that she is breastfeeding I believe, and she's pregnant now.     Most people will agree that they will not attempt to kill her while she is pregnant, but obviously the fear is this woman might be in jail for two years until the next child is out and then will be killed.

But... Muslims would never do such a thing! The Qu'ran says people can leave Islam if they want, right?  It's a religion of peace!

The Qu'ran says people can leave Islam if they want, right?

There is an analysis in the article that says that there are two trains of thought on whether apostasy is a crime or not. One group of people refer to this:

There shall be no compulsion in religion.

But others refer to what Muhammed said:

It is not permissible to spill the blood of a Muslim except in three [instances]: A life for a life; a married person who commits adultery; and one who forsakes his religion and separates from the community.

The latter group's thinking is more dominant in Sudan. However that isn't the point. At the end of the day if it is the law of the country then it should be followed, regardless of its origins or what I think about it. I'm not sure how easy it is to change the law in Sudan, but that would probably be a starting point. Like any other country, laws can become outdated and need ammending. Of course, if the government feels that this law should remain in effect then that is their choice.

Well done Islam.

You show what you are really about every single day when we see and hear these kind of stories.

I find it revoltingly ironic that her father isn't being charged with adultery for marrying a Christian woman. But I'm sure that rule only applies to women.

Also, who the hell took her to court in the first place!?!

I just hope all the publicity this is getting will put pressure on Sudan to spare her.
