halo-series-hd-remake.jpg

Master Chief is getting a facelift with an HD collection of his exploits. We've learned that Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being collected in a Master Chief-focused HD remaster coming from Microsoft. Our sources say that the set will zero in on Halo's most famous soldier to refresh audience's memories ahead of Halo 5: Guardians' release, so curiosities like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach likely won't be a part of the package. The game's developer is unknown at this point, but considering that Saber Interactive handled Combat Evolved Anniversary and is also working on an unannounced Xbox One project, the team is a likely suspect. Also unclear are plans for digital distribution, resolution and frame-rate (Microsoft bragged that that the next Halo will run at a "blistering" 60fps), piecemeal releases, or if the games will surface on other platforms as well (PC, anyone?).

Microsoft has gone on record saying that it would love to have Halo release more than once every three years. It's used different developers to fill that task since, but we're still pushing two years since Halo 4 launched. To commemorate the first game's 10th birthday, Microsoft released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for the Xbox 360, which served as a stop-gap for the 343 Industries-developed Halo 4; there's precedent for this sort of thing. This remake makes a lot of sense for Redmond for a couple of different reasons: it satisfies the more-frequent release desire and it helps fans get caught up on the story. It also gives them the chance to re-experience some of the best console shooters with better looks and sound -- everyone wins!

We reached out for official word from Microsoft and are waiting to hear back, but we're not expecting much beyond the usual, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation."

Halo 3 and 4 getting HD remasters sounds like a paradox.

All I keep thinking is this...

Microsoft must really have a BIG E3 planned.  That stuff like this is just tidbits for them right now...

Well 3 out of 4 are already in HD and news of 2A was leaked months ago, it's no surprise they're dropping the news now.

I suspect we'll see the same happen to Fable and Gears too.

I think Halo 2 deserves one, it could do with a lot of work to finish / enhance parts Bungie weren't able to get done during their development hell period.

I would have been happy with just Halo 2 remade.

I would be happy with Halo 1-4 on PC. In HD. Remastered. :)

ODST and Reach are some of the best games in the series though, it'd be a shame if they ignored them.

Of course, doing a "HD remake" of a game that's only a few years old is just strange. H2A I'm expecting, but H4A?

It's not like it hasn't been done by others, I seem to remember that there are a few PS4 versions of PS3 games in the works that aren't that old.  Quick and easy ports really compared to something as old as H2, 3 and 4 need less time and work but if they sell these all as one big pack for a single price like it sounds then I'm all for it.

I've been contemplating rep playing ask of them for the story. This would be perfect for that. Otherwise still mostly just looking forward to halo 2!

Halo 1-4 on XB1 as a single pack for $50-$60?  I think that'd be a deal, specially if it's got MP to, but maybe it's only the SP parts?  Have to wait and see.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition or the older titles?

PS3 didn't get the first 2 titles from Crystal Dynamics until the HD collection. They were on PS2 only, so it was actually a worthwhile Collection for them. Both of them are older than Halo 3. The TR collection on 360 was pointless as the games launched in HD from the start. The only advantage being the reduced cost and inclusion of DLC IIRC.

The Last of Us is the big one and there is rumours now of GT6 being ported and announced at E3. There's been quite a few PSN titles which were remade and available to PS4 owners via crossbuy too.

I'm hoping they release these digitally as a compilation, but that each individual game can also be purchased on its own.

Also, I'm fine with direct 1080p ports of the 360 games (Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4) so long as they also crank up the AA.

Id love to see a remake for a series that was the same engine, same visual style, same everything visually for all games in the series and have any previous games combined for 1 new massive game. That would be pretty kick ass. Realize it is only a pipe dream, but still, a man can wish.

That would be more than welcomed on my part as well.

Can you picture Halo 1-4 as one massive game. That would be sweet. I wonder if anyone at Microsoft is thinking the same thing.

Yeah, thinking about it, probably the only reason I think it's strange is because I own the games and I've played them on my 360. I'm actually waiting for the PS4 remake of TLoU because I don't own a PS3, but wanted to play it.

Hell, it was only before the release of 4 that I actually sat down and played the Halo series, last time I touched it was the PC release back in 2002 or so (With cheats so I couldn't die, younger me was a wimp) So something like this would have actually been perfect for me

Why? Halo 3 isn't even HD to begin with and while Halo 4 is native 720p (I think?) a bump up to 1080p would be welcome (Y)

Highly doubtful. They were adamant about keeping the (literally) exact same gameplay for the original Halo when they released the anniversary edition.

I hope they don't mess up online coop like they did in Halo: Anniversary.

Was completely unplayable for so many people, would lag immensely for whoever wasn't the host. This even happened when I tried to play over LAN directly with a cable so it wasn't my network.

That's what caused half the problems, Anniversary was literally Halo 1 with a new renderer bolted on. I even ran into glitches that I hit originally during my first play through.

I wonder if they'll do the same with H2:A, using the original engine keeps the same "feel", but of course also brings back all the bugs (Including stuff like super jumps, which people actually want for MP) There's also the issue that Halo 1 didn't have online play while Halo 2 did, so are we going to see the original MP code with new XBL support, or something like a port of the Halo 4 netcode with new maps, it'll be interesting to see.

We don't even know yet if they're going to have the MP side of these games or if this will just be the SP parts of 1-4 redone for the XB1.   They might decide to just do MP for one game but to run 4 "different" MP versions at the same time could be a mess or at least a pain for them.   Didn't H1A run/keep Halo 3s MP actually?  I don't think it was the original Halo 1 MP at all from what I remember hearing.

They could only give us, say, Halo 2 MP or Halo 4?  That's IF they do MP at all, but the way this sounds, and the way it's named could hint that it's just the SP side that has you playing MC.
