halo-series-hd-remake.jpg

Master Chief is getting a facelift with an HD collection of his exploits. We've learned that Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being collected in a Master Chief-focused HD remaster coming from Microsoft. Our sources say that the set will zero in on Halo's most famous soldier to refresh audience's memories ahead of Halo 5: Guardians' release, so curiosities like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach likely won't be a part of the package. The game's developer is unknown at this point, but considering that Saber Interactive handled Combat Evolved Anniversary and is also working on an unannounced Xbox One project, the team is a likely suspect. Also unclear are plans for digital distribution, resolution and frame-rate (Microsoft bragged that that the next Halo will run at a "blistering" 60fps), piecemeal releases, or if the games will surface on other platforms as well (PC, anyone?).

Microsoft has gone on record saying that it would love to have Halo release more than once every three years. It's used different developers to fill that task since, but we're still pushing two years since Halo 4 launched. To commemorate the first game's 10th birthday, Microsoft released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for the Xbox 360, which served as a stop-gap for the 343 Industries-developed Halo 4; there's precedent for this sort of thing. This remake makes a lot of sense for Redmond for a couple of different reasons: it satisfies the more-frequent release desire and it helps fans get caught up on the story. It also gives them the chance to re-experience some of the best console shooters with better looks and sound -- everyone wins!

We reached out for official word from Microsoft and are waiting to hear back, but we're not expecting much beyond the usual, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation."

Halo 3 and 4 getting HD remasters sounds like a paradox.

All I keep thinking is this...

Microsoft must really have a BIG E3 planned.  That stuff like this is just tidbits for them right now...

Well 3 out of 4 are already in HD and news of 2A was leaked months ago, it's no surprise they're dropping the news now.

I suspect we'll see the same happen to Fable and Gears too.

I think Halo 2 deserves one, it could do with a lot of work to finish / enhance parts Bungie weren't able to get done during their development hell period.

I would have been happy with just Halo 2 remade.

I would be happy with Halo 1-4 on PC. In HD. Remastered. :)

ODST and Reach are some of the best games in the series though, it'd be a shame if they ignored them.

Of course, doing a "HD remake" of a game that's only a few years old is just strange. H2A I'm expecting, but H4A?

It's not like it hasn't been done by others, I seem to remember that there are a few PS4 versions of PS3 games in the works that aren't that old.  Quick and easy ports really compared to something as old as H2, 3 and 4 need less time and work but if they sell these all as one big pack for a single price like it sounds then I'm all for it.

I've been contemplating rep playing ask of them for the story. This would be perfect for that. Otherwise still mostly just looking forward to halo 2!

Halo 1-4 on XB1 as a single pack for $50-$60?  I think that'd be a deal, specially if it's got MP to, but maybe it's only the SP parts?  Have to wait and see.

Tomb raider among others...

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition or the older titles?

PS3 didn't get the first 2 titles from Crystal Dynamics until the HD collection. They were on PS2 only, so it was actually a worthwhile Collection for them. Both of them are older than Halo 3. The TR collection on 360 was pointless as the games launched in HD from the start. The only advantage being the reduced cost and inclusion of DLC IIRC.

The Last of Us is the big one and there is rumours now of GT6 being ported and announced at E3. There's been quite a few PSN titles which were remade and available to PS4 owners via crossbuy too.
