capr
I am looking for a laptop but want to make sure it can support 4k office apps. no gaming 1) will 4k monitors do 60hz over display port 1.2? how is samsung doing it? 2) any advantage between dp 1.2 and hdmi right now? it seems like neither can do 4k at 60hz but HDMI is more readily available. Guest
Any laptop with nVidia GTX 6xx (or equivalent AMD GPU) or newer will support 4K without problems. The issue is finding a laptop with the appropriate port. Can't really help there, sorry.
+LogicalApex MVC Posted May 17, 2014 MVC Share Posted May 17, 2014 Why do you assume DisplayPort 1.2 can't drive 4K resolution video? It appears so to me... DisplayPort 1.3 is on the way out doubling DisplayPort 1.2 bandwidth and this will allow 2 4K streams or a 1 8K stream; suggesting that DisplayPort 1.2 can handle 1 4K stream. The main advantage to DisplayPort 1.2 over HDMI is that it supports Daisy Chaining, provided the display supports it.
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted May 17, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2014 DisplayPort can do 60hz 4K, HDMI can do 30Hz 4k, currently that is. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share
capr
ooo daisy chaining! thanks for that bit of insight. So if DP 1.2 can do 4k at 60Hz, then why are there so few monitors that do 60Hz 4k? Am I missing something?
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted May 18, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2014 4K monitors themselves are fairly new, so there's a limited selection anyway. Using Dell as an example, their first 4K monitors do 60Hz 4K (And also cost around a grand and a half), while their second models are more consumer focused and only do 30Hz (Over DP or HDMI), of course they're also half the cost of the 60Hz models. It's the joys of first gen tech, it's all over the place.

It's not quite 4K but, unless you have very very special needs, there is no practical difference.

Meh that's basically just a 1440p monitor, the resolution/quality of the image isn't increasing cause you are just stretching it out over a larger surface area. Boz
I have ASUS G750JX with thunderbolt/displayport output and GTX 770m.. Theoretically I can do 4k.. I just didn't buy a 4k monitor to try it.. most 4k monitors on the market are garbage.. the only ones who are really worth something are from $1500-$2500 (like ASUS ones). The solid middle ground with monitor is the Samsung 4K monitor here. http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LU28D590DS/ZA It looks great and it's $700.
