Best Alternative to Viber?

Recommended Posts

I got charged for 5 overseas calls to Phillipines made through WiFi over Viber. When I got in touch with Viber customer service support they insisted it's not their problem even though the calls show up on my Viber call log. They have not responded to further emails leaving me angry and disappointed.I have deleted this app. Is there a good alternative to Viber? I make a lot of International calls but vowed never to use this app again

I'd probably say that one of the more popular alternatives is Skype. Like Viber, you can make Internet phone calls for free, and you can also call landlines and mobiles if you have any Skype credit. I use it to have video calls with my friend in China and we've rarely had an issue.

Haven't heard of that Viber issue before, though. When you say that you made some international calls through the wifi, are you sure you weren't phoning a landline or mobile number? That will still charge you money, regardless of where you are phoning from.

I am sure I made the Viber call over WiFi .It was supposed to be a free call since my girlfriend also had Viber on her mobile phone but they charged my credits .Skype is my favorite for making video calls but the subscription rate is almost $70 per month for 800 min to call Phillipines .

I've been having issues with viber but it's mostly network issues with constant disconnects but they have never charged me anything to make calls to Vietnam and Hong Kong.

I hear Tango is a good alternative, I'll be giving that a try soon.

I had a similar experience when using Viber. Almost every second call is a dropped call and they also overcharge your credits leaving you wondering where all that money went. It?s been 3 months since I switched over to this app called Global Call. The call rates are cheap and there is no subscription fee. I just found out on their FB page about a promotion event which lets new users avail double credit. You might just want to check it out http://www.globalcall-1plus1.com

i use imessage (voice or video with ios7+) and its clear clear clear. Way more clear then viber, skype, hangouts, yahoo, etc. Just started recently using FaceBook messenger since their latest update where they added voice calling and push-to-talk features (but only decent on IOS/andriod windows phone app sucks). Globe/smartbro been running free facebook through the app on any 3g/4g connection for a year now about EVEN with no credit on the phone.  don't know when its going to end.

for regular calling try rebtel app

I don't understand the point and popularity of Viber when there is Skype and if i am not mistaken way before viber ever existed.

I have talked with many people using it and i am still to found any major and unique feature that will justify its installation on my phone.

I always use Skype for video calls but pay as you go Skype rate to call the Philippines 12 Cents per minute which I feel is very high.

I have never heard of this app . Just checked it out on Google Play . This offer looks good .Guess even if they overcharge my credit I don?t have much to lose.

aren't voice calls free too as long as you're calling another skype account? as in not a phone#

i wouldn't think it would be any different from video calling

Yes voice calls are free only if there is internet at both ends. Sometimes I need to call landlines and place calls which aren?t over internet. To do that I purchase call credits and these credits are being charged when I make normal free Internet calls. I?m never going to use Viber.

Ha Ha you just sounded like my wife. She just recharged her account for $40!!! She got the additional $40 .That?s like a lot of talktime since the call rates are very cheap .Nevertheless quite handy especially during my frequent work related  overseas trips to India and Philippines.

I don't how how you drew parallels to me and your wife but I guess it actually makes sense to purchase maximum Global Call credit of $50 and get a bonus of $50 since this is just a one time promotional event .

Me too! I asked my dad why he wants me to use Viber to talk to him instead of Skype, and he said it's better for phones, since it's made for them, but that didn't make sense. Probably since Viber is marketed as a replacement for your cellular phone, while Skype is marketed more as a general communication device.

I tried Viber and I don't see anything that warrants it being better than Skype.

That sounds pretty bad. The advantage compared to Skype is that their audio quality for WiFi calls is much nicer than the regular Skype call IMO. I talk with my dad in Houston, TX and me being in Costa Rica, it sounds much better through Viber, the sound is cleaner. This issue is concerning for those who use credits, thankfully I don't have any or a credit card associated, hopefully he doesn't either!

I get far too many dropouts with Skype. Even on a stable WiFi connection and the trouble is, nowadays, most people don't bother with user accounts for apps. They like the flexibility of apps like Viber that allow them to seamlessly use their telephone number. Once WhatsApp finally brings in voice calling, I think it'll finally kill off Viber.

I second that bro  Viber is good enough just for making free calls over the internet to other Viber users who have the app installed on their smartphones .When I tried purchasing credits to call my folks back home who aren?t that net savvy there were too many dropped calls and couple of times my credit was overcharged . Based on my  experience with calling apps it doesn?t pay to be a loyalist. If you want more bang for your buck try checking out new apps on Google Play. After few permutation and combinations I decided to use Global Call to place regular VoIP calls to landline and mobile phones and with their latest promotion it offers the best rates at the moment .
