Baidu AV 4.4.3.6903 update includes unknown software

I  got an update yesterday to Baidu 4.4.3.6903 which installed something called SoftMgrMiniSetup located in programs/bav/baidu/antivirus/pcappstore setup bav exe.

 

Does anyone know what this is. It's trying to make contact with the internet and I disallowed it for now. Doesn't seem to have any ill effect so far.

 

Not finding much pertaining to this on any searches.

Based on the name it's a software manager, possibly part of the updater, you'll know if you start getting update errors

Exactly what I was thinking! Their website and forums suck though, so no info really available there either. At least not as of this morning when I did some looking there.

Just did an update to this thing on another computer and this time I let the SoftMgrMiniSetup connect. Set of multiple warnings from the firewall and wound up installing some pcappstore program, which has an uninstaller. I uninstalled that and so far have not received another warning from the firewall.

 

Debating on uninstalling this thing now as I hate AV's that think they have to continuously install crap like this!

 

Updating program manually still works fine, so not thinking it has anything to do with updating.

Back on the computer I was on when originally posting this topic. I decided to let that SoftMgrMiniSetup go through it's steps and install pcappstore. I immediately uninstalled it. A few minutes later, I was going to manually check for an update, but it had already been downloaded to version 4.4.3.7006 and had reinstalled that pcappstore crap.

 

This AV is now going to be history!!

Avast and Avira have both become more bloat than anything else. Have used them both and learned to dislike them also!

 

Isn't their a simple AV that just does AV scanning without a ton of crap, other than that no sense in using it anyway, ClamAV?

 

No wonder I usually run without an AV! :x

Have you tried 360 Internet Security from Qihoo? Or even something like Bitdefender Free or Panda Cloud...

ClamAV does what you want, but not in the way you want. It's an on-demand scanner designed for servers, there is no constant monitoring/scanning.

Haven't experimented with 360 Internet Security yet, but have used BD and Panda.

Yes, I know ClamAV isn't a full time scanner and besides that, it's also a flat out POS scanner that couldn't find an infection even if it was infected itself!
