Offworld Trading Company from Soren Johnson

Recommended Posts

The first game from Civ IV lead designer Soren Johnson?s Mohawk Games is official: Offworld Trading Company. Ars Technica wrote a great piece introducing it.

No military units exist in this sci-fi RTS, but the constant changes in the player-driven marketplace require truly adaptive strategy to come out on top of the cutthroat corporate warfare that shapes Mars in the near future.

Soren talks more about Offworld on his blog, and the official site has some tidbits as well.

Game looks good, but I suspect I'll get terrible at it. Is there any kind of demo planned for the future?

Not sure yet on plans for a demo. It's still a while until release and resources are best dedicated to development at least for the time being.

Exciting Daily Challenges
Try our daily challenges and test your mettle against other players to try and get the highest score! Take a look at the scoreboard and watch the leaders' replay videos to check out their strategies.

Learn about Mars' Corporations in the Campaign
Four big businesses are vying for all of the resources and control on Mars. Learn about what brought them there and how they intend to drive their competition into the ground and come out on top.

I bought the deluxe edition last night and gave the spare key to a friend. He's been able to give it a go and he says he's very interested in it. Sadly I'm still at work, so I have to make do with listening to the Soundtrack until this evening. Not that that's a bad thing, I'm really enjoying that in itself!

Well, there went my bank holiday morning!

Honestly this is a great game, and a great twist on the RTS genre. The tutorial gives you the basics (although seems to leave out the somewhat crucial idea of you only being provided with <X> amount of tiles) like any tutorial should, but there is quite some depth to this game. And I can see what other people have been saying, due to its angle on economics, and economic theory in general, this really is a game which switches things up each time you play.

I initially came back in here to write a mini review of my first impressions, but I've found myself stuck for ways to explain it. I'm going to have a think about it and come back later, but I'm really happy I stumbled across this game and checked it out! (Y)

It's a fun little game, I kind of got over it after winning a few games.  Can see it being something to pick up and keep coming back to for a lot of people.
