Got another Carbon X1 - now with awesomeness !

Recommended Posts

About 2 months ago, I bought a Carbon X1 ThinkPad - it was pretty cool, touch screen, SSD, ThinkPad reliability, 8GB RAM, etc..

But it was last years model (which is why I was able to get it for $600 off the $1800 sticker) & it didnt have the 1440p screen.

So what do you do in this situation ?  Sell it to someone who doesnt care about specs just wants "the best"

Enter the new ThinkPad Carbon X1:

Core i7 4600
8GB RAM
240GB SSD
2560x1440 in 14" screen
about 1/2" thick - around 2.5 lbs
ThinkPad quality through and through

Last time I was told post pics or its not true... well here:

The other cool thing is this active Function bar across top of keyboard - with the touch of a sensor - it switches between 2 formats - the Function Keys, or Macro/shortcut Keys - I dont think its OLED - Maybe LCD - not sure

Regardless, its better than the 1st one & now Im happy ;)  (the touchpad kinda sucks though)

Why did I post this ?

Nobody believed me when I posted a couple of months ago - & Im all giddy & high from that fresh new electronics smell ;)

I've had the opportunity to set up a few of these at work... I really hate the backspace and delete keys up there in the top right. Also the touch sensitive function keys are horrendous imo. I'm very glad I ordered the T440s for work myself as the company was going to get me one of these as well...

(Screen is very nice) Glad you like it though.

Yeah I have setup 4 so far.  I do like them a lot but I would also choose the T440.  The T1 is lighter and has better battery life but not a ton.

Forgot to mention, everything is soldered on the T1, no upgrades at all.

I just got my first Lenovo -- not my choice, work laptop -- and it's a W540 with the same sucky touchpad that I hate after less than a day of working with it. Must make sure that I never forget my mouse :)

Whats funny is I agree with every single post in this thread.

I also do not like the delete & backspace keys - I know I can swap it - but I still dont like it.
The touchpad is annoying, but I also bought a Logitech MX Anywhere, which I love so - that problem is averted.

Before the X1, I had only owned T-series ThinkPads -  I would drop my T-series all the time to show people how durable it was - not ready to do that just yet.

Yeah, there are no upgradeability options on the X1, but with Core i7, 8GB RAM & SSD - I wont ever need more on a laptop.

vanx,  the W540 is a beast - you will soon learn the greatness of ThinkPads - and then you will be like everyone else, once you own a ThinkPad you never want anything else. ;)

I despise the touchpad they're using on the premium models now as well, I can't believe they went with something worse than the previous choice. It's a nightmare to use without the driver software support -> user setup too, which we discovered is per-user on Windows.

Other than that, we're finding the latest Haswell (black sticker) models to be pretty robust.

Lol I would never drop any laptop but I do know the T series are a different breed when it comes to durability.  That's why I generally recommend them.  Most people aren't careful enough to have a X1 last several years.  But they are very light, that has to be the main reason I'd want one.  Carrying a regular laptop around everyday will wear you down.  It's not exercise when you end up with shoulder damage lol.

That W540 is awesome, but they are not light nor small generally.  The funny thing is most of the ones I see getting assigned aren't ever used for CAD/3d work.  They are just power outlook devices.

Sweet machine, that keyboard (the odd key placements or lack of Capslock) and that touchLCD pad thing above the keyboard mainly killed it for me. The lack of RAM upgrade options killed it further. It's bad enough the XX40(s) series can only use 12GB of RAM (downgrade from XX30(s) series which maxed out at 16GB of RAM.

Still liking the look and size of that thing though, still drool whenever I see one.

I only use it for work which is remote desktop into the servers, then browsing & email - so 8GB is more than enough for me - I certainly realize how others might need more if they have VMs or something like that.
