T3X4S Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 About 2 months ago, I bought a Carbon X1 ThinkPad - it was pretty cool, touch screen, SSD, ThinkPad reliability, 8GB RAM, etc..But it was last years model (which is why I was able to get it for $600 off the $1800 sticker) & it didnt have the 1440p screen.So what do you do in this situation ? Also the touch sensitive function keys are horrendous imo. I'm very glad I ordered the T440s for work myself as the company was going to get me one of these as well... (Screen is very nice) Glad you like it though. Yeah I have setup 4 so far. I do like them a lot but I would also choose the T440. The T1 is lighter and has better battery life but not a ton. Aergan Posted May 21, 2014 Share Posted May 21, 2014 I despise the touchpad they're using on the premium models now as well, I can't believe they went with something worse than the previous choice. It's a nightmare to use without the driver software support -> user setup too, which we discovered is per-user on Windows. That's why I generally recommend them. Most people aren't careful enough to have a X1 last several years. But they are very light, that has to be the main reason I'd want one. Carrying a regular laptop around everyday will wear you down. It's not exercise when you end up with shoulder damage lol. That W540 is awesome, but they are not light nor small generally. The funny thing is most of the ones I see getting assigned aren't ever used for CAD/3d work. They are just power outlook devices. Veteran Posted May 21, 2014 Veteran Share Posted May 21, 2014 Sweet machine, that keyboard (the odd key placements or lack of Capslock) and that touchLCD pad thing above the keyboard mainly killed it for me. The lack of RAM upgrade options killed it further. It's bad enough the XX40(s) series can only use 12GB of RAM (downgrade from XX30(s) series which maxed out at 16GB of RAM. T3X4S Posted May 21, 2014 Author Share Posted May 21, 2014 I only use it for work which is remote desktop into the servers, then browsing & email - so 8GB is more than enough for me - I certainly realize how others might need more if they have VMs or something like that.
