Gold or Platinum PSU?

Recommended Posts

What PSU would you recommend. I am thinking about getting a more efficient one than the H.Wong Brands that come with Pre Built PC's

80 Plus Gold of Platinum. Or would Bronze Suffice?

What are your recommendations?

Are Antec good? Yes. But are they the top beast? No.

The marketing of PSU efficiency has no real standards attached to them, a lot of PSUs when tested do not meet the "standard" and don't deserve the grade they are listed as, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

A better quality power supply like a Corsair or Seasonic would be better to me than buying something because it lists itself as 80+ Platinum, if in doubt, look for quality tests and reviews to see if they actually do fit the bill.

The most important choice is to do a good job "right sizing" your PSU. 80Plus certification only requires that the PSU maintain its efficiency rating at certain load points. The sweet spot for 80 Plus efficiency is about 50% of the PSU's designed capacity.

I would go with Gold or higher certification these days as somewhere along the lines, at least some testing has been done.

So many cheap PSU's (even from reputable brands) have little or no adequate shielding and questionable component build quality - but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

I usually go with something ?65+ from Antec or Coolermaster with whichever has the highest efficiency rating & satisfies load wattage requirements. Avoid high wattage generic PSU's as they're often promoted on special offer and often untested.

Titanium is not even a noble or precious metal. The whole labeling is based on precious metals.

Coolermaster do release some horrible and questionable products - however they do test their power supplies and provide adequate shielding to prevent EMI in most models I have encountered (with the exception of entry level POS / OEM < 350w non-painted lines).

Granted, if Antec has the same ratings for the same money - I would go with Antec.

My vote would go to Corsair or OCZ based on recent reviews i have seen. I am in the market for a new PSU and cant decide on anything yet. I want modular but also not something too expensive.

Surprised nobody mentioned Super Flower yet. If I were to pick a PSU by brand alone it would be between them and Seasonic since they both make their own stuff and have a solid reputation, but a smart buyer always reads reviews.

You did not really just say that did you ?   I mean, really ?

And just incase you actually think there is no Titanium rating for PSU - there is - the Corsair 1500i is Titanium rated

But thank you for you knowledge into the periodic elements - I was in 8th grade too ;)

They dont really have a market share in US - and their dumb naming scheme doesnt help - but you are right - apparently they are quality.

I used to ONLY use PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool - now - I will use any of the premium brands - antec is as low as I would go and feel good about a build.

Hello,

I have always had good results with Corsair, PC Power & Cooling (now known as FirePower), Seasonic and Zalman, to name a few few brands.

Regards,

I'd go with the corsair it's modular, too. I never knew about SuperFlower. Antec is meant for low power.
