Just got an email from Cox

Recommended Posts

So, I've never had this happen to me. I just signed up to Cox last month and I have their highest internet possible. 150mbps. Well today I got an email saying that I was 21gb over my 'limit' What. The. ######? Limit? So I looked a little more into it and after reformatting and updating a few games from steam, Downloading Wolfenstein in steam... in the past 2 days I used 200gb.... What is this ######? Apparently cox will terminate my service if I go over again. Well ###### Cox. I have NEVER had a 'limit' on my bandwidth and for the price I'm paying they should be shutting the ###### up. I'm not one of those 10mbps users. I PAY so I can download at top speeds. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to resolve it easily? I foresee myself going over my limit every single month. I'm almost constantly streaming to netflix. Playing online games, while broadcasting through twitch. On my old provider(Road Runner) in new york, I averaged 800gb per month.

How much do you pay a month? That really is ######## that the 150mbps service is capped at a fracking low 200 GB's

I'm sad for you :(

I'm pretty lucky I guess I pay $69 per month for a 15mbps service but with no caps. Last month I went over 350 gigs. I can't even fathom caps. That would suck some serious balls.

I agree with you. If you pay for premium service, you should get premium speeds and no ######ing caps! That's ######!

ISP caps are going to be a big issue soon.  With more cloud services coming and more and more software being/wanting to be download only.....ISPs are going to hold back progress.

Yes, the cap is 400GB/month. I used 200GB in the past 2 days. I'm at 421 for the month as of today. So... I'm supposed to not do anything on my internet until the cycle resets??? I've known of caps in other countries, but in the US I haven't ever heard of caps outside of mobile networks.

Looks like I won't be able to download Watchdogs this month. Preordered for what...? Should have gone to the store to get it. Can't get Wildstar either. The two games will easily push 100gb alone.

Ouch. I would swap ISPs. That is a bit crazy...

A 400GB cap on a 150Mbps line is just pathetic. You shouldn't have to worry about how much you exhaust the line you're paying for. They should be forced to suffer the punishment for oversubscribing their lines.

Exactly, at that speed you could easily pull down 200GB a day, I can't even imagine that type of speed coming from a 15 meg service. on 150 how many megs down does that translate into? I get about 2 megs per second.

I download at over 20MB/s. Wolfenstein took about 45 minutes and its a 50GB game.

Contact them.   It seems you're trying to play the victim here.  If you didn't look into the terms and conditions of their service before signing up it's not their fault.

Having said that, I do believe if one is paying for an ultimate/premium service a more reasonable upper limit (if any) should be imposed especially with all the streaming services available.  So give them a call, at least see what, if anything, can be done.

I plan on it as soon as I'm off of work. However 'playing the victim'... I haven't ever heard of a US ISP having a limit on a users bandwidth so reading the terms and conditions... lets face it. NO consumer does until they get this type of notification.

There is a reason I pay for the most expensive internet. I use it. Between Smart tvs, cell phones, computers, xbox 360, wii U, and PS4... 400gb is very easy to use. ESPECIALLY when games are 50GB and you download them to If I were to download Wolfenstein to my computer, and another in 1 day, there goes 1/4 of my bandwidth for the month. The best part, is I was planning on re-downloading my entire steam library to backup to pc. Thats 170+ games. Only to find out that I will have to split that download up over the course of a year or so just so I don't overdo my bandwidth every month on downloads from steam.

It irks me. Victim... Yea... I am the victim here. EVERYTHING requires the internet these days. Not to mention I PAY for netflix. PAY for Hulu. PAY for amazon prime. PAY for Xbox Live. PAY for PS+. Steam doesn't tell me I can't download all my games. Sony doesn't tell me I can't download a game. Microsoft doesn't tell me to slow it down. Netflix doesn't warn me that I watched 30 movies and 15 tv shows t his month. Your statement about the 'victim' makes me feel like you're a lawyer for Cox or something. Ignorant. It has been proven that our ISP's could give us unlimited bandwidth without a cap on the speed. leaving our hardware to be the bottlenecks. So, yes. We ARE victims when we pay for the best they possibly offer and it isn't enough.

Wow, now you're just ranting and are acting like you're entitled.  Look, it is up to the consumer to read contracts so you do not leave yourself vulnerable to situations like this.  I am a consumer and a Cox customer, not a lawyer nor ignorant.   Ignorant would be your actions by not doing any kind of investigation into the services/terms being offered.  I''m not the one you should be mad at, plain and simple.  I do read contracts and terms of service, why would I leave myself open to problems that I can easily avoid by being a pro-active consumer.  Ignorant?  Not by a long shot.  So calm down and see what you can do to correct this situation, don't go off attacking anyone.  Good luck.

Good luck with that.  They are known to not give a crap.

I have had Cox as my ISP for over 15 years and never had a single speck of trouble with them. They have always been very accommodating with me when I had issues that needed correcting.

Alright. Ranting? You sound exactly like a defense attorney. They ADVERTISED it otherwise and didn't tell me anything about a limit. If AFTER purchasing the service I am notified of a LIMIT then THEY are absolutely in the wrong. This is exactly what I read the day of purchasing the internet service

Yes he is coming across a tad entitled and I hope when or if he speaks with them he keeps his calm, but god damn! 400 GB cap on a 150mbps connection ... #### that sucks! If I had a 150mbps connection id probably burn through 1TB per month.

Hmmm.

The majority of cases I've heard of ISPs with limits have been US, that and a few UK.

I'm pretty sure "Other restrictions may apply." encompasses monthly bandwidth caps as well. So basically you signed up to a service without knowing the full limitations of said service (nowhere in your image does it says anything about no bandwidth caps), and are complaining that they didn't tell you, when you are the one that failed to ask about such a thing? By you agree to the terms, they are in the legal right.....now, if you spoke with them beforehand and asked about data caps and were told "No, there are no monthly bandwidth caps." or something along those lines then you would totally be in the right....but that is not the case.

You really don't have a leg to stand on honestly. Many US-based ISPs are incorporating bandwidth caps in some form.....Time Warner (road runner) is one of the largest ISPs that doesn't have bandwidth caps....but with Comcast buying them, I wouldn't count on it staying that way.

I admit that 400GB/m is quite a low cap for 150Mb/s, but honestly you shouldn't be using 400GB/m on a regular monthly basis.....I have 6 computers hooked up to the internet on my network (with 5 regular users), one system used for streaming Netflix at various times throughout the day, the other 5 constantly on and fetching email, playing online games (including always running Steam to keep games up-to-date), watching youtube videos or something along those lines, and I have never gone over around 250-300GB/m on a 50Mb/s line. If you are pulling 400GB a month on one or two computers, you need to honestly take a look at your internet usage and tone it down a bit.....no reason to use that much bandwidth a month between one or two systems.

I agreed in a previous post that the 400GB limits are not reasonable and yes it "sucks".   But the real point here is he did not read the terms of service, etc. and is now blaming Cox for the situation.  Consumers have to understand what they are getting into when purchasing products and services.  There is no lack of information available.  He not a victim of bad business practices, he's a volunteer.  He chose not to learn about the service being offered.  And now he's mad, so be it.  Live and learn, I hope.
