Apple updates will not download, Mac/iOS

Recommended Posts

For the past few weeks I've been unable to download any software update for the Mac or iOS without having to tether my phone and get it off cellular.

  • Mac App store will get updates for third party APPS fine, but will not start the download of any system level updates. (see pic below)
  • iOS updates will not start a download at all, actually messes the phone up due to this.
  • Does not matter what device, as long as its on my network it is doing this.

Heres what I've tried so far with no luck

  • I've tried changing dns services, verizon's, to google, to opendns
  • Restored iOS and OSX Mavericks with new installs
  • Factory reset router(s)/modems
  • Tried another computer/device in the house

Has anyone else had any problems like this before? I'm pretty certain its my isp blocking it some how, but if you've ever tried to tell a tech/customer service person this. You'll understand I'm pretty much on my own with figuring it out.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated, its becoming a pain in the arse to deal with.

Edit: Seems even trying to directly download the updates no luck. Files are hosted here http://appldnld.apple.com/

Very weird, can you ping Apple's iOS/OS X download server on your end? It's "gs.apple.com" and "supportdownload.apple.com".

I know you have reset your router but check none of the ports for Software Update are blocked within the router config (or open them manually to see if it resolves the issue) - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6175?viewlocale=en_US

supportdownload.apple.com I can ping but can NOT load it says "Service Unavailable - DNS failure"

I can ping + load the placeholder page for "gs.apple.com" and you should be able to ping but not load "supportdownload.apple.com" by default; sounds like an ISP problem.

In that case, tried getting the OS updates from here? - http://support.apple.com/downloads/ (just tried getting the Mavericks combo updater with no issues from "supportdownload.apple.com")

I'm able to get the OSX updates, but not the iOS updates. Stupid annoying, did just figure out a work around but its something I shouldn't have to do. Connecting to a vpn lets the download start, then I'm able to disconnect and it still finishes downloading.

Damn isp
