Robots will replace fast-food workers

Recommended Posts

You eating in a restaurant where is known to lack quality and hygiene. You can eat in whatever restaurant you want, just an observation.

Not once have I been ill from a McDonalds so it can't be so bad. I'm not sure about the US, but in the UK you have to meet certain hygeine levels otherwise you risk getting shutdown and it wasn't just an observation, you were telling me to eat at other places.

I'm just putting it out there, I'm not one of those people that eat McDonalds on a weekly basis, barely even monthly. I was talking about past experience with their crappy assemble of a standard burger.

you fix it... what else would you do?

So instead of paying people to do the job, you'd have robots, and then a lone wolf sitting on his ass all day getting paid in the hopes of a machine malfunction?

Yea, If this $15 crap goes through, fire the food workers and just keep store management around. I mean seriously? $15 an hour to flip a patty, come on, get real!

And as soon as they get $15 and wonder why everything has gone up in price, they'll want $25 an hour.

And eventually they will become self aware and demand to be paid $15 an hour.

Then other robots come in and we have robot on robot violence!!!

that is kind of high... other business dont pay that much until you been working there for years.

but for real though..

if not higher pay then more hours.

I work 40 hours a week working fast food and make $300 a week.

its possible to live with this.

but some of these people want life easy, internet, phone, cable, flashy cars.

I was raised to live without those...

Ignore them, they are typical American Liberals, they assume they know what's good for you and have no qualms telling you that

I say bring on the robots, we'll all be better off

This is sierra's more practically minded friend, and I would like to point out that robots have been tried in fast food before. McDonald's tried to automate drink dispensing back in the late 80s/early 90s, and they could never program a robot with a fine enough touch to consistently put drink lids on correctly. The process itself just has too much initial variation with how the lid starts to initially fit over the cup, so the robot can never assess and properly manipulate the lid into place. Not to say the motion can't be taught, and vision systems can't be calibrated to to detect misplaced lids, but the fine variation to make the task quick, accurate, and repeatable is prohibitively expensive. On the other hand, a job is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. It is the nature of everything of material value in this world. I can go grill a burger myself in 15 minutes, maybe less if I prepared a fresh patty before hand. Lets say I make $15.00 an hour. Should I pay someone $3.75, or 1/4 of the value of an hour of my time to prepare me food? Or should I save the money make some food my own damn self. Now lets raise that minimum wage from 8.25 ( in illinois where I am) to 15.00 an hour. That food, which currently could cost twice that, or about $7.50, at some fast food places already, can no longer be made for 3.75. Assuming it even could in the first place. That minimum wage goes from 8.25 to 15.00, nearly double, what is going to happen to the price of food? I'll bet it nearly doubles. After that, this only affects everyone up to the new minimum wage. And now suddenly everyone at or above the minimum wage, their money just suddenly lost value. Increasing the cost and price of common goods has negatively impacted them because the government didn't suddenly force a pay increase for them. Our economy is at a fragile enough balance as it is. Our government already adds abouts 100 new regulations to the market every year that cost at least $180,000,000 each, in some cases per company, and not just the industry as a whole. Arbitrarily inflating ALL minimum wage jobs is going to much more expensive. If you want more money, go learn how to do something other people can't do, and some small company wants someone who can do it. Become more valuable by learning to do things everyone can't. Everyone can cook, thanks to microwaves. Everyone can clean, even if they choose not to. These jobs are cheap for a reason, its the price we're willing to pay to not have to do this ###### ourselves. You jack up the price, people stop paying, and then where will you be?

1) Don't use my account anymore. :P

2) Make sure you have proper facts and did the math, reports say prices would barely raise to cover the costs of wage increase, 3-5%.

3) Labor should still earn a living wage. :)

Anyone that eat in McDonald's deserves to get sick. Go to better alternatives than eating in a piece of trash restaurant like McDonald's.

Drop the sanctimonious attitude. I'll eat wherever the hell I want to.

See, I think he meant you reap what you sow. Not that everyone who eat at these places actually deserves to be sick. Once the human factor will be lost I expect more issues with the food.

I am not certain about everywhere but at least the Mcdonalds near where I live a large portion of the store is already automated. They have a machine that auto dispenses fries into the basket and lowers, and raises it. then dumps it in the bin. Just a person needs to salt them. And when an order for a drink is put into the computer it puts a cup onto a conveyor and then puts the correct amount of ice and beverage into the cup. They also have an auto grill that puts it on a conveyor for cooking the beef patties and what not. They just use people to put the sandwiches together and do the human interaction part of the ordering.

it is a very efficient store and you can usually get in and out in a few minutes.

they don't do that anymore at McDonald's.

It's all double sided grills (or griddle) now, throw on whatever amount is needed, toss on some salt and close the lid, 75 seconds later they're ready to be served up. Wendy's is the same way.

Yup, because costs will go up in other areas as a result and they will be stuck in the same situation.  People need to learn to make smarter decisions and to manage their finances better.  Sorry, but it is not my job to bail others out for their stupid decisions in life.  Why should my costs go up as well.

Anyway, would be fitting if these people eventually lost their jobs because of robots.

You do realize that many people get sick in other, non fast food, restaurants as well.  And all restaurants, fast food or not, have inspections to make sure they are up to code.

Here is my thing, if you are making Mcdonald's your nine to five for the rest of your life, there is indeed a problem. Instead of bitching, go apply for a scholarship and go to school, get a better job, and quit flipping burgers. But no... we are now living an entitlement age, give me give me give me, if they pay $15.00 fast food workers, I will be the first one to stop going to these places. The ones around here are filled with flies, have never been renovated and on certain days, the people behind the counter have a pissy attitude.
