R.I.P PS3 Obese

Recommended Posts

My launch / backwards compatible PS3 obese finally died. (Beeps / Red light flash)

I just wanted to honour its memory here. I will be trying to revive it (Zombie PS3 obese) with cleaning / new thermal compound.

Wish me luck!

I use one of the internal fan controllers from Circuit Surgery. Currently it's keeping my life-supported PS3 CECHC03 w/ 750GB HDD alive at the moment.

I recommend replacing the thermal pads as their factory state is pretty appalling (most of mine weren't even aligned with the correct mainboard locations)

Did it give any indications before it gave up? Mines still going, but I do wonder how much longer with the amount of huffing and puffing the fans do...

Mine had a similar problem, albeit it wasn't a launch model PS3 (those aren't that good in thermal management). It ended up being the HDD being borked instead of a overheat issue. If you don't get a YLOD, try swapping the HDD out.

God speed to your phatty. Mine YLOD's a couple years back, but I took it to a shop to fix it, only cost me $79. To me it was worth it, as i'm holding off as long as possible to get a PS4.

Did you get a backup at least before it went caput?

No backup. I'll try to clone the HDD or repair it if it is doable.

Thanks for your prayers and well wishes!

None at all. Just turn on and gone.

My PS3 (60GB phat... Well 250GB phat now :-) )has been running like a champ since the HDD swap out. It's not too far from a window where a fan is located. And sucks in some fresh air.

But I do take a can of air to all my consoles about once a month. I do the preventive maintenance thing. But there is nothing that is going to truly stop internal failure. Things just break sometimes...

May ur PS3 make it through this ordeal unscathed...

Sorry to hear this. Good luck with it (Y).

Knock on wood mine is still going.

That's crazy there was no real warning either.

I tried a new HDD, cleaning, new thermal compound. It's gone..

It served me well. Looking forward to getting a PS4 and an Xbox One.

I think my close-to-launch phat PS3 is on its way too. I've noticed the fan kicks in very often, and is very loud, even when just sitting on the menu.

I might crack it open and re-paste it, maybe put a bigger fan on. I really don't like the slims, so if it goes I'd be looking for another phat one.

They are not is, for they are she!

EDIT: but sorry you couldn't get her to work Piggy, PS4 awaits. The queen has moved on - long live the queen!
