Biggest disappointments in a game?

Recommended Posts

What are your biggest disappointments lately in gaming? I picked up Watch Dogs and really wish I waited. Its essentially a stripped down 'Splinter Cell' with some GTA elements thrown in. It brings nothing new to the table. I suppose its no biggie, being only 30$ thrown down the drain. It had potential but I found the story to be severely diluted by side missions.

I truly miss the days of a STORYLINE that had you engulfed for days. After beating Watch Dogs in 12 hours when I was excited for a 40 hour story... well... refund?

12hrs huh?  That is disappointing.  Maybe I will hold off on this until a later date.  Still playing Saints Row the 3rd and that has better reviews than Watch Dogs.

Don't get me wrong. It is a great game, but I feel duped. I expected 35-40 hours according to the devs for the main story line. I got 12 and it just ended... I kept looking at the time I put into it and told myself, wow this is getting good and I'm still 20+ hours from it being over!  However It was over... really wish I waited for a GOTY version with some bundled season pass stuff.

My biggest recent disappointment has been Spiderman 2.

The controls are really awful (when wall-running it's almost impossible to go in a straight line), sometimes the "web" doesn't always grip to buildings that are obviously within reach, and it seems really glitchy - I have now gotten wedged in a piece of scenery a couple of times - each time meaning I have to quit the game.

My biggest disappointment lately in gaming:  Dragon Age II.

Dragon Age: Origins was a great game... not perfect but a really solid game.  I thought they were starting a new franchise on the right foot with a ton of potential.  One of the major points was how you could not only make your own character but the race and class and such actually effected the story not just what you look like and what abilities you could use.  It was "Origins" afterall.  Again it was a solid start but not perfect and I expected Dragon Age II to improve/expand upon that formula.  Instead they threw out the whole "story tailored to your choices" in the second one and gave you a predetermined character where you ran through a basically pre-scripted story line.  I HATE games about a pre-scripted STORYLINE.  If I want to experience a good pre-determined story I'll watch a movie.  They have far better stories than what you get in video games anyway.  I want to make my own story in a game through my actions and Origins gave me so much hope for the future of the franchise and 2 took that all away.  I'm cautiously optimistic that 3 will fix all they broke in 2 though.

If it's really that short, I might wait a few weeks before buying. I actually ended up liking the new Wolf3d.exe game more than expected and that is taking me a bit more time to play through because I have the difficulty set to maximum and I'm not amazing at it.

But as far as a recent disappointment, I would say Sim City.

I really wanted Sim City... Didn't have the money to get it when it was released and the Day 1 problems stopped me from getting it alltogether. Kinda forgot about it until you said something.

Was going to pick it up tonight, but will wait a few now.  I still plan on playing it, but will finish SR the 3rd first.

Aliens:Colonial Marines or Duke Nukem.. tossup on which disappointed me more. Still on the fence about Sim City.. heard a lot of not-so-good things.. I want to buy it but..

As far as Watch Dog's playtime goes, is that doing everything or just making a beeline for the finishing line? There's a few open-world games that can be wrapped up stupidly fast if you want, Skyrim, Fallout 3, etc.. basically getting what you put into it.

SR3 was a hoot, enjoyed the hell out of SR4 too, silly as it was.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows for PS2

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauntlet:_Seven_Sorrows

The previous Gauntlet games (arcade, Dreamcast, PS2, etc) were amazing. Hours of fun just grinding away with friends.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows promised to be MORE. Better graphics, more areas, more depth. Midway and John Romero were working on it.

The game was gutted. People working on it left or were fired. TONS of content was dropped. Most of the game was scrapped. They then shipped it "as is". Missing content and all. You'd end up with tons of money and nothing to buy in the game, since most of the stuff was removed. It was the shortest Gauntlet game with the least amount of content. You could complete it in a single sitting.

That was one of the biggest disappointments I've had with gaming. I was looking forward to it to much.

That was just pushing the main story. I ignored every possible 'side-mission' thinking they would take away from the story. I have ADD so what happens often with me is if I let that little stuff get me distracted, I end up never finishing the game.... like I have done with probably 50 GREAT games over the past few years. I said 'Screw this'. I'm DOING IT.

Ahh ok then, not bashing the playstyle but I'm the opposite, a completionist, if it's doable I do it.. getting there's half the fun and all that, probably easily get that 40 hours out of it.

Mass Effect 3's ending.

Yea I hear that.. great game up until the last few minutes. Not ashamed to admit I added the happy ending mod just to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Assassins Creed III, destroyed the franchise for me, never even finished it, just watched the ending on youtube

ACIII wasn't a bad game by any means it's just that Connor was such a BORING character. at least for me AC4 completely made up for the bad characters of 3

The lackluter campaign of GTA V. I was left feeling the game was incomplete compared to prior releases by Rockstar.

GTA V has a story line? :p half the fun of the new gta is the online mode where you can goof around with your friends (i've probably seen several hours of gta5 gameplay (as i don't own a 360 or ps3) but have not seen 1 sec of actual story line lol)

Assassin's Creed 4. Beautiful visuals, boring storyline. Here's a tailing mission. And here's a tailing mission. And just for a change here's a stealth mission... with tailing.

yeah i'll admit the missions were a bit rinse and repeat but i quite liked the overarching storyline in 4

I never really considered GTA for multiplayer, I guess more emphasis was put on it compared to the campaign.

I don't really understand people who buy sandbox/open-world games and then complain about the story.  These games aren't about a pre-defined story.  They are supposed to create a world for you to play around in and have a good time and not hold your hand as you walk through a series of predetermined events.  I love the Elder Scrolls series, I've got every one of them and spent MANY hours in them yet the only one I've ever finished the story on is Skyrim.  Similarly I own all the GTAs and I've never completely finished one of them.  I'd not do the story at all in them if it wasn't for the fact you have to get to certain points to unlock portions of the map.  I think John D. Carmack said it best:

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

If you want a good story then watch a movie, that's what they're there for.  Games are supposed to be interactive.  When I tell you what happened in my playthrough it shouldn't be the same as when you tell me.  We made different choices and we should get different results otherwise the choice is an illusion and you're just walking through a movie that forces you to kill a boss or push a button to unlock then next part of the movie.  Obviously due to technical limitations there's only so many choices a game can present but these should be going up as tech improves yet today's games are often less dynamic then those in the past.

I played Watch Dogs last night for about 12 hours and I only got to the level where you visit your Nieces grave with your Sister

I spent most of my time stopping crimes and hacking people's bank accounts.

Bioshock Infinity supposed to be a game of choices and it was the most linear game id played in ages, the story was weak and was nothing like BioShock which i loved

If that's the message you got from infinite, I think you wholly missed the point. The game was about fate, and the potentially large ramifications small decisions can have on reality (constants and variables). The game was never marketed as one where player choices make a difference to the overall outcome.
