I noticed this game has kicked your ass X number of times now

Recommended Posts

I like Video games. Although it is very hard for me to find one I dont' get bored with. What happens to me on most games is i'll play them and a section will keep kicking my ass that I get annoyed with it don't return.

A good example of that I "Metroid : The other M" ... AMAAAAAZING game. I think I put about 10 hours into it. Then I got to a certain point, in fact it might even be the one i used for the screen shot. That kicked my ass and frustrated me that I never returned to the game. So for me at, least it would be neat if a game noticed this spot was giving you trouble and offered to make, at least this that section, easier.

It annoyed me on Wolfenstein, I was playing on Max difficulty, and if you die repeatedly at the same checkpoint, the tip changes from combat advice to "You can change the difficulty at any point"

Is there a reason "kicked" is missing the E in your screenshot?

On the bright side, it didn't tell you that all your ass are belong to them.

It should that would be funny too!

that's actually a good idea...   there have been a few games like that for me

Thanks. "Cave Story" is another good example. I must have put 6+ hours into it. Then got to a spot were it was so frustrating I couldn't get passed and the game instantly became no fun any more. I never went back.

Because they're fakes, perhaps. Or the programmer can't spell worth sh..

It would be even funnier if when you click "yes for the rest of the game" the mortal combat voice guy says "######!"

If there's one thing I really appreciated about Sin Episode 1: Emergence it was the dynamic adjustment of difficulty.

I really don't care what the difficulty is at as long as I don't get so frustrated I can't be bothered to play.

Difficulty spikes in generally linear games are terrible. It's not like a Souls game where you expect it to be difficult cause the first opponent you meet generally kills you, plus the whole thing is designed so you can go do something else and then return to the more difficult parts better prepared. In linear games those points where you feel like the devs said "Ok you had enough fun, now you LOSE" are a pain in the ass.

So i never mind these notices that remind you to change difficulty if you want. A lot of games do it, including COD. Games should have either no difficulty settings with balanced progression, or meaningful and gradual difficulty settings. Easy shouldn't be like a cheat mode, but it should basically be a guarantee of completing the game. The hardest setting should basically be a guarantee that you will NOT finish the game unless you're totally insane.

Treyarch do it quite well. Veteran settings on their games might as well be called Nade Rain Mode.

There is definitely one or two games which after dying at the same spot several times give you the option to skip that specific part (not just lower the difficulty, if I remember rightly).

I can only remember seeing this in one or two games though and hell if I can remember what they are now. It is going to annoy me until I remember what they are now

Puzzlers and racers tend to do this, because they're so based on specific stages. A lot of mobile games do it - typically the puzzler variety and some of the tower defense kind.

Not sure if serious or trolling

Personally I hate the handholding feature you mention. Recent Mario games have included it, either with the white tanookie suit or letting you complete it whilst invincible (bar pitfalls), and I refuse to use them.

Much more gratifying to do it yourself (Y)

Which part? That Metroid other M is an amazing game?  ...I've been waiting for Next(er) gen 2D metroid game since Zero Mission on the GBA. I LOVED other M. but then that one spot that I tried over and over to beat made the gave no fun any more. Since then I Think some how I also lost my saved game.

Trolling about Other M, because it's universally panned by Metroid fans. God that story is awful, it's enough to give you nightmares. Samus the bad ass Bounty Hunter with Daddy issues :x

Nothing wrong with the rest of the series, just that abomination. The gameplay is so-so from what I remember. Definitely not what I wanted from a 2D Metroid though. The joint venture with Team Ninja was a big mistake IMO.

But yeah, say no to "everybody is a winner" in games (N). Suck it up Wagon and change your strategy :p

Yes, the part were they had to give you permission to use the weapon and not discover them on your own did suck. I thought the gameplay was great!

As pointed out many games these days let you change difficulty on the fly, so that is the developers way of doing what you are requesting, just not as obvious.

With that said, if you cannot get past a certain part in a game, 98% of the time it is your fault for not changing your strategy up.

I really don't understand why games don't just have a dynamic difficulty option by now.

If you're killing everything and barely getting hurt it should automatically get harder.  If you die over and over it should automatically get easier.  That way the game is always challenging for a given user.  This assumes a linear game though.  Oblivion did something like that and it sucked but it's an open world game which works differently.  If you can go back to areas you were at when you were weaker you want them to be weak compared to you so you feel you've progressed.  It's sucks to gear all the way up in uber gear/elite skills then go back to the starting area and see all the little random baddies also in uber gear/elite skills...

Fallout 3/Skyrim actually did this well, open world style, in that the difficulty for a mission was set when you started it and then locked so if it was too hard you can go level and come back later (without the difficulty going up) and if you do the mission at low level it's easier for you but if I do it at high level then the difficulty is higher for me even though it's theoretically the same mission.

wasn't ever a fan of those games either

Games with Decent save points that were not like that which I played all the way through and loved every minute of it

Super Metroid (to be fair I passed it on an emulator with save states)

Link to the past (played on SNES)

Super Mario World. (Played on SNES)

Zelda Wind Waker (played the Game Cube Game Via Wii) AMAAAAAAAAAAAZING Game.

Beyond Good and Evil

Games I played but never passed

Mass Effect 1 (played it for a good 10 hours, then got stuck and couldn't figure out where to go, lost interested)

Luigi's Mansion, I remember loving that game but I must have got stuck or something because I never went back.

Metroid the other M

Twilight Princess, I remember putting quite a few hours into but remember thinking the game was stupid, the wolf section was dumb
