I took a break at work last night, walked outside and saw this huge moth on the side of the building.

I've seen ones half this size before, and thought they were huge, but this beast was a mammoth.

I thought about picking it up, but it started to move its body weirdly, ha and im not sure if they bite (maybe smaller moths are too tiny to bite).

Probably could've put a leash on this beast and flew it around

what is happening?

My friend has those moth at his work... he has photos of them.    Probably same size as the one you posted.

Edit: I went to my friend's photo album.  He has same moth as yours.. same colors.

The cecropia moth is North America's largest Moth. They are so beautiful!

No, they do not bite... LOL. Insects have no teeth....They have tubes called proboscis that suck out nectar from flowers.

Great info thanks!

Can't believe they get even larger!

They must be rare around here, or since i live in kansas (lots of open empty fields and lands, and not much forest), they don't have much protection or shelter . First one i've seen!
