new budget phone, android vs WP

Recommended Posts

After a Google Nexus One and Note 2, i'm looking into a budget, around 4" phone. Which would be bang for the buck? Should I continue with android or try WP?

All I need is communication apps, like whatsapp, fb chat, telegram, skype, tango and some other productivity apps like check list and notes.

Depends. I would check to see if you can try out a device for a few days and return it if you don't like it. I know with Verizon when I get a new phone, I have 14 days to return it for a full refund. Both will do what you want very well, but depends on which platform you are the most comfortable with.

Budget Nokia are really nice and Android upped their game with the moto e

The Lumia 520 and Moto G are very capable phones, you'd like either for their price point, I'll place a vote for android, but that's because I personally don't like wp, but that doesn't mean you might not

I can vouch for the Moto G. It's smooth, and probably the closest you'll get of a pure android experience without going to a custom ROM (which is also dead easy to do, if you're so inclined).

The Moto E is, from what I heard, simply a cut-down version of the G.

I have 2 of them (Moto G) gave one to my son and the other to my wife, then bought myself a  sony z1 compact :p

Pretty much but the reviews are really good and speed tests faster in several areas over the S5. pretty smooth as well.

The 520 is the most popular Windows Phone so people are probably satisfied with it. WP comes with office and onenote app is great, so that would meet your productivity needs. The apps you've mentioned are all there, with the exception of Telegram.

From the looks of your hardware, a Windows Phone would integrate nicely with your Win8.1 devices.

Windows Phone is really smooth on low end hardware. I've heard KitKat has changed some lag problems with Android, but I haven't tried it myself.

The 520 is very cheap, capable device. Doesn' have a front camera, so 620 might be more suited if you're doing video calling.

I've 520 with me right now, will gift it away soon. The device is just beautiful and charming.

They are actively promoting third party apps for now for WP, and an official one is coming soon, from what I've read on WPCentral. So it is only a matter of time until the final version is released.

The Moto G and E are going to likely be the best bargain around if you factor in the ecosystem, WP is ok, but Android obviously has  more and better apps

Yeah, it's quite an impressive little device for its price. Probably the best bang for buck in the low-end Android market.

As far as software availability goes between Droid vs WP, yes, there's less in the WP market; but sometimes choice can be overwhelming to the uninitiated, and a smaller number of choice could actually be an advantage. The amount of crap in the droid market is unbelievable.

  • 1 month later...

I'm leaning towards a refurbed/used WP. I like square corners more than the round ones, 620. :p And I'm aiming towards 4-4.5" screen.
