Warning to Windows 7 users upgrading to 8.1

Recommended Posts

It tells you all this during the install before it installs anything, so why are you claiming it does not. Either way you shouldn't be promoting "dirty" upgrades instead of clean installs. Again this goes back to the whole research aspect of this.

Well, I can't explain it any clearer. If you are already running the installation on Windows 7.1 then you have already purchased 8.1 and have already fallen victim to this issue. If you refuse to read the thread then that's on you.

Furthermore, your opinion about upgrades is just that. As long as the software is designed to perform updates they will happen, and the vast majority will happen without incident -- regardless of your opinion.

Funny how you tout research when you can't be bothered to read the thread with enough comprehension to understand my point.

Well in that case I'll stick with 7

Or you can just buy 8.0, upgrade it to 8.1 and maintain everything you have.

Still not sure why you're even rambling on about this. You're crying over spilled milk. There is no guarantee for OS upgrades. Fundamental differences in the OS will always require application re-installs. Not sure how this is anything new?

And every good geek knows that an upgrade for us means, wipe, and reload....

While your point is somewhat valid....

In order to play any Video content you do need the Windows media center app (or a third party app) which is now $9.99 if you have windows 8 or 8.1 pro. But that was done to reduce the cost of windows, as you will see now for $120.00 you get the FULL version of windows versus and upgrade, and $199.99 gets you the full version of pro, which before you'd only get the upgrade, a full version of core or home premium as it was before was something like $200.00 and pro was $300+ dollars. So, with start is back or start8 you can unearth what is, always was, and will always will be Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows 7 with tiles!

Sincerely,

Either way this isn't a real issue. You don't want to do an upgrade anyways. Clean install is always the best way to go to prevent problems in the long run. While the media center thing might suck for some its the most under used app for me. Maybe used it twice in Windows 8/8.1. Problem is it takes too much time to setup for something that I can do better with XBMC.

Exactly correct!

Wouldn't have ever even dreamed of doing an upgrade.

Wow. I let people with Windows 7 know that if they want to maintain their programs to ignore Microsoft's advice and purchase 8.0 instead of 8.1 and somehow I'm crying?

You people are beyond me.

Thread summary:

Ignore what Microsoft says on the Microsoft Store site. Windows 8.0 will upgrade 7.0 and maintain all your settings, applications, files, and data. Do not purchase 8.1 if you wish to keep your applications.  If you require Pro then boxed copies are still available on Amazon.

I'm done.

We've know this for a while now. It's no secret that applications are the most trouble when it comes to upgrades, which is why many here don't perform them, myself included. Why do you think Microsoft is working to move away from these older applications?
