Uncharted 4's new directors: Neil Druckmann & Bruce Straley (Uncharted 2, TLOU leads)

GI:So [The Last of Us co-leads] Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann have stepped in to facilitate Uncharted through this transition period. How is that going and what is the future for Uncharted?

 

EW: It's not so much a transition period, actually. We've asked them to lead the project. They are excited as veterans of the Uncharted franchise to take the responsibility and they're doing great.

 

GI: Did those guy work on the PlayStation 3 Uncharted games?

 

EW: Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2, yeah.

Interesting as there has obviously been a lot of public confusion about what is going on at ND. I'm still certain the game is going to move to be grittier like TLoU and that might have caused a split in the camp, and then in return directors/leads leaving.

I remember them saying there wouldn't be a TLOU 2, but I imagine that just means a continuation of Ellie and Joel's story, there's so much that can be done in that story world. "Zombie" games/movies with deep and meaningful stories are few and far between, TLOU and Walking Dead are the exceptions.

I'm a little worried about the shape ND is in after all the recent departures, but I'm not a big fan of Uncharted like many. Just hope it doesn't impact them too much in future IPs. (have yet to read the full interview so ignore if they cover this).

Did you play Uncharted 2? It's the best.

 

New IP question

 

EW: Well I mentioned earlier the number of products we have going. We definitely have another project on the scale of Uncharted in very early pre-production stages. We have the sizable team that it takes to get something like that off of the ground, but it's got a long runway in front of it. We have a lot of great ideas and some stuff that is already getting everybody jazzed and excited. So, it's a long way off before we can really start talking about it in detail. But no, [bruce and Neil working on Uncharted] is not going to impact our ability to keep that stirring that pot.

I enjoyed the Uncharted series, so I'm very interested to see where the series goes after all of these changes.

I do agree with Andy though, I hope they are working on some more unique experiences.
