After 80 million units sold, the PSP is finally discontinued

Newsbrief: It's had a long run, but the PlayStation Portable is finally being discontinued in Japan this month after selling more than 80 million units worldwide.

 

According to an official statement from PlayStation Japan, and as reported by Polygon, the halting of PSP shipments came as part of a push to sell more PS Vitas in Japan, with two new retail bundles available.

 

The PSP first launched in Japan back in December 2004. Sony also released the PSP Go back in 2009, but this was discontinued in 2011.

It's a great little machine but it sadly didn't get the support it deserved, (arguably the Vita's biggest issue too). Brilliant homebrew scene though, which I think many people kept theirs for in the end.

 

I still use my 1000 series now and again for Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX. Best portable SF there is IMO.

I hacked mine and it opens up the library by a wide margin. It's great to play some Nintendo or Genesis games like that, to just pick it up and play and go anywhere. So it's a useful system to the foreseeable future aside from just the PSP only games. I just hope the price of it's titles and second hand sales go down a bit, every things still kinda pricey for what it is.

Never had one but remember the day it launched, and remember E3 2004 very clearly, that was an exciting time. Seems like a lifetime ago. Life is but a dream, enjoy it while it lasts - thank you PSP, you helped many people be happy though i did get into several lively "debates" with people playing you with no headphones on public transportation :angry:
