Gerowen Posted June 6, 2014 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Before I go to bed, I want to remind everybody that today, June 6th, is the anniversary of D-Day. On this day, 70 years ago, allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, and charged head-first into a heavily fortified enemy position. I have family friends and relatives who were there in one capacity or another. One of them was an ambulance driver, and said there were so many dead bodies on the beach that he literally had to run over them in order to get to the casualty collection points to pick up the wounded who were still alive first. Our World War 2 veterans are leaving us every single day. The amount of respect that these people deserve is beyond comprehension. Take a moment today and stop to think about what those men did that day in order to stop the Nazi war machine and protect the independence of not only ourselves, but of the western world as we know it. Imagine being on one of those boats, with enemy soldiers shooting at you, sinking other boats around you, and charging onto that beach with machine gun fire pelting the sand all around you as you charged inland with no cover or concealment. That is what every single one of those men had to do so we could be here today speaking English instead of German. Because of those men, you are free to lose yourself in Farmville or Survivor or whatever it is you fill your free time with. If you have a World War 2 veteran in your family, especially if they were involved in the invasion of Normandy, take a moment to thank them, take them out to dinner, learn a little something from them. You could put a flag up on your front porch, or watch a documentary or do some reading on the D-Day invasions and learn a little about what lead up to and what resulted from those battles. The worst disservice we could ever give these men is to let them fade from existence without talking to them and learning from their experiences in an armed conflict as important as World War 2 was.?
