Chrome Now Blocking Extensions Not Downloaded from Chrome Store

Recommended Posts

So I have just discovered today that Chrome is now blocking extensions not downloaded from the Chrome store.

I can see why this would be good but there should be some sort of override so I can use an extension I have found extremely helpful but now is broken :/

Basically. Download and unpack the .crx file and then add it to chrome with developer mode turned on.

Chrome will keep warning you about it though every time you start the browser up, which I find annoying.

Hmm, that doesn't appear to work :/

Why Google is doing this with their chrome web store but not their Android store, I don't know...  might even be a deal changer for me as I only have one extension running:

I may have forgotten one important step.

First use a program like 7zip to extract the .crx file.

After that you need to edit the manifest.json from the extension with your favorite text editor and make sure it has " "manifest_version" : 2" somewhere in it.

Save the .json then try adding it to Chrome and then it should work. It's been a while since I've had to do it so again, I forgot about this part.

override: use Opera.

installs extensions from anywhere if you tell it to accept it, doesn't warn you except when there's an update, and you can install an extension to install from the chrome store.

The video grabber extension might also be a good alternative for you. It has a workaround for the no download videos on youtube rule.

The .json already is at version 2 :/

Although kinda makes me think maybe the developer is hiding something, hence it isn't in the store but such a shame as the extension just worked simply and brilliantly.

It seems Chrome accepts the extension but when loading YouTube, no box is visible and as such, the extension isn't actually loaded.

HOWEVER:

It seems to get it to load properly, I have to refresh the YouTube page once it's loaded for the first time.  Not ideal :/

Will look at other solutions.

Another important thing to note to get the trick I (badly) described is that you need to be at least running the beta version of Chrome. I assumed most people were so I left that part out.

or use srware-iron for more chrome-ish interface, which hasn't adopt the walled-garden extension policy.

Wow Opera is a step back from IE, let alone FF or Chrome, even if they are just a Chromium clone now

Iron is another waste of time, and it's been proven that their claims are easily gotten by changing a few flags and restarting

Neither are viable options, like mentioned earlier, just disable the new flag and move on

Really, then again I don't have irrational ie hate syndrome(iiehs), but opera has all the functions and speed of chrome, in a better interface with more useful features which will be even better as they keep adding in old opera features.

Operas UI being better is debatable. But I do agree, functionally it's the same as chrome without some of the restrictions. Like the one being talked about in this particular thread.

One pixel top border?

Off topic but this is what he is talking about:

Opera will be sane choice in scenario which Chrome surfing into.. Becoming too much restrictive and policies.

Firefox and IE can give them competition but they need to speed up their games and development especially IE since it has several standard compliance issues.

IE is not that bad but I still don't use it, because my themes always makes IE unusable lol

And you can always go for making it a private extension in the chrome store to solve the extension problem though this is not the best solution :/

Also canary builds have this annoying extension check disabled.

That's the Windows 8 version though. Windows 7 version looks nothing like that.

Still has them one pixel border, always has. Chrome doesn't. Useless on multi monitor and other situations.

Ah ha, that would be my problem then.

A lot of effort :/

Thanks for the link^

However, using Windows 7 (Home Premium) means I don't have access to a Group Policy Editor.

Found I can install the required files from here: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-enable-group-policy-editor-gpedit-msc-in-windows-7-home-premium-home-basic-and-starter-editions/

Got's to restart and will give it a go.....

EDIT:  Which didn't work.

I installed the file but still no access to Group Policy editor.

Iron does not recognise the extension either so that option is out too.

I wonder what the reasoning behind all this is   :/

EDIT 2: Through the above link though, I managed to find another extension which is still in the Chrome store, which does the same thing so I guess I'll use this for now.
