Websites like FaceBook are blocked on my computer? Why?

Recommended Posts

Having configured many of "the good ones" They have the ability to disable the alerts.

Ours here at work is at least nice enough to still have the alerts.

Sounds like a kid trying to circumnavigate parental control.

That is exactly what this is sounding like.

Sure, but I don't see why an administrator would just leave a user sat there with a blank screen. Surely some sort of notification is preferred.

Where's the fun in that? :D We need a giggle every now and then.

I have found people tend to ignore questions that provide the obvious answer as they are hoping others will as well as it does not provide them with the answer they wanted.

I have a sneaky suspicion that is the case here.

Not entirely sure suggestions like this are smart if the thread is genuine, please refrain from making them before the user potentially does something damaging

We have it at work and a user could sit for days without getting an answer/notification, they know that there is a websense and if something not related to work doesn't work they will surely know why but if it is related to work, we get email about it and fix it, so it is kind of obvious. :)

As for this case, it looks smelly so we'll wait and see what the OP has to offer. :D

True .. but take for example social networking - a lot of modern businesses rely on social networking platforms to do business..Some users have it in my company, some don't .. so the notification is needed. We provide warning pages to people accessing questionable, but not illegal content, such as alcohol or gaming sites. The end user has to confirm they are under watch before they can proceed. This thread really does appear to be a kid trying to circumvent simple security measures put in place by his/her parents.

The lack of response(s) so far from the OP, I think proves that.

You said it yourself, social networking will NEVER block Facebook, Linkedin, etc and I guess that wouldn't be fair if they do that otherwise that would be dumb imo. ;)

Nothing has changed in the host database. And I never install any special firewall. The computer even worked very well yesterday. It is my own Mac, not office.

Did you check your hosts file?

Do you have an anti-virus installed or firewall? If so, can you temporarily disable these?

Is your router blocking certain websites?

Yes, nothing changes. Is it possible that some parental control has been installed on my Mac?

Yes, if you have parents. ;)

Otherwise, check any Firewall programs.

If you are on a router, check any filtering feature of that also.

It's actually quite easy to setup parental controls on a mac and those controls are quite robust.  This is sounding more and more like those controls were setup and you just don't realize it.  You say it is an 'office' computer...is it a byod (personal) or a corporate-shared (business issued but allowing for personal usage) mac?  Or is this nothing more than a kid trying to get around a parent's attempt at internet control?

Sharonto said it is his own mac, not an office system

That does not limit the ability of his parents putting on a restriction. It is easy enough to do with loading on stealthy apps or redirecting the dns to a service that filters like opendns. If you search you will find quite a few.

K9 comes to mind, going old school there is net nanny, and many full protection anti malware suites come with content filtering.

Not k9 or opendns, looks like my dad had paid a third party website filtering software called Aobo, how to find it out? My games and social sites are all blocked, thank god.

Are you going to tell us how amazing that program is now? I feel like that's the next step.
