Websites like FaceBook are blocked on my computer? Why?

Recommended Posts

Hey, guys. I can't open many websites on my Mac like Facebook, MySpace, YouTube etc. Some programs such as Skype and WOW can not run normally either. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Did you check your hosts file?

Do you have an anti-virus installed or firewall? If so, can you temporarily disable these?

Is your router blocking certain websites?

Need more information, where is this happening, when did it start, did your antivirus change anything, has hosts file been modified?

We can't help if we don't have this info

sounded like a MiTM attack untill you mentioned WoW but then could still be ... sounds like an SSL block or just your firewall/anti virus

Think the best bit of information you could give is what you see when you try and access those sites.

SSL block are also awesome way to block pesky https sites, just add the sites certificates into "Untrusted Publishers" list,

my untrusted list currently contains certificates for:

*.google-analytics.com

*.adserver.yahoo.com

*.yieldmanager.com

*.facebook.net

*.facebook.com

Are you at work? are you at your parent's? I would imagine you are being blocked by an external proxy and not on your laptop. More info please?

if you are at work, at school, you probably have a web filter blocking you (there are are a lot of them out there, some built into the company/school firewall).  If it is a business/school computer it could be part of the security/antivirus package as well.  If it is home, your parents could do the same if they are decent enough or have a good set of friends to rely on for this type of thing.  I know that I have setup some things like this for my aunts kids.

I have checked the activity monitor, and I can't find any unknown program or malware running. Help please?

I think you need to answer some of the question raised by the other guys before any definitive help can be dispensed.

Several people have asked you questions in this thread and you haven't answered them. None of us can help you without more information, such as where you are experiencing the issue (work, home?) how long you've been having the issue for, what kind of changes have happened to your machine recently that could be responsible, are you running an antivirus, etc.

Guys give the OP a chance to reply. Since he hasn't been online after the post has been made so I assume he is busy or away, we can wait until he replies.

If you stated entirely correctly that you are using a mac then there wouldn't be malware running that would cause this.  And I don't believe netnanny or anything similar is made for os x.  Now, os x parental controls if properly setup would be able to do this.  Again, where are you connecting to the internet that you are having this issue?  Here at work, we use a system called bluecoat proxy that filters a huge amount of the internet and blocks a large amount of websites.  On the other hand for some family members I have used opendns to setup some simple rules.

Make sure the Date and Time, and Timezone is set correctly on your computer. Incorrect date/time will cause certificate errors, which causes sites like those to not allow you to login.

I vote for Work Proxy is the problem here.

Damn you work proxies ....

They normally come up with a warning / block screen informing the user is violating policy - the good ones do at least...

Having configured many of "the good ones" They have the ability to disable the alerts.

Sure, but I don't see why an administrator would just leave a user sat there with a blank screen. Surely some sort of notification is preferred.
