We just got our first glimpse at the first new high-definition Zelda game, and it looks truly insane. Zelda is going open-world.12P

Series producer Eiji Aonuma announced the game during the Nintendo Digital Presentation this morning, promising that this Zelda will feel totally different thanks to their open-world structure. It looks like a cross between Wind Waker and Skyrim.P

The game is scheduled for 2015.

ugh cell shaded... and zelda has mostly been open world?

That was my first thought, but they did a pretty good job of explaining what they meant by comparing the new game to Windwaker, whereas it "appeared" to be a big open world, but it was in reality a collection of bounded areas with specified entry and exit points.

I don't mind cel-shaded if it's going to look like the images posted. The stupid cartoon style of Wind Waker was awful because they made Link look more like Kirby than a cel-shaded version of Link.

I know they claimed that one image of the field was the game itself, but I will believe it when I see it in action, as that whole other scene they showed of the "boss" fight was clearly a pre-rendered cutscene.

While the WiiU has indeed produced some visually fantastic games, I just cannot see it reaching that level of detail in an open world game. Just does not have the horsepower, pun intended.

They said it was in-engine footage, there's really no reason to doubt it. That scene also could have been in engine.

in-engine footage

? run on a PC.

Jokes aside, I'm very excited about this. I've always bought each Nintendo machine only for the Zelda games and it's looking like I'll be buying a Wii U as well! Great news indeed.

I'm glad they are going back to sell shaded. I never liked any of the Zelda graphics Accept for 1st Zelda for the n64 and Wind Waker. I hated Twilight Princess and the last wii Zelda.

I liked the graphics in Twilight Princess but the cell shading used in Skyward Sword and now this one just really do fit the Zelda game style

I played quite a bit of Skyward sword and enjoyed it (not as much as OOT though), but just didn't have the time to actually sit down and finish the game before giving the Wii back to my sister-in-law so her little boys could play it.

Scripted, not CGI, rendered yes, but in game.

In-engine is very ambiguous...what is the engine running on? Actual Wii U gameplay footage would have been better. At any rate i've never even really played a Zelda game but this looks amazing to me. One more reason to get a Wii U.

I own a WiiU. As such I have plenty reason to doubt it.

Apparently it was in game on a Wii U:

Many people from the media kept asking me if the footage from the new Zelda game for Wii U is just a promotional movie, but that really is actual gameplay on Wii U. Also, I wasn?t kidding about how you will be able to reach the mountains that appear in the distance if you should choose to! I also got to talk about Hyrule Warriors on Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3 on the live internet show from E3 with Mr. Hayashi from Tecmo Koei Games. If you?re interested in hearing what we talked about, the videos will be posted soon so please check them out!" ? Eiji Aonuma

  • 5 months later...

This is what the wii u needed since day 0, They can never win console sales with terrible ports of pc and xbox games.

Metroid Prime HD would be nice.

They need to make another top down Zelda like Link to the past... those days where amazing.. they remade Mario as a patformer why not Zelda as an old school high res hd top down game

It's not HD, but A Link Between Worlds is basically what you're asking for.

They kind of did with a Link Between Worlds for the 3DS. It is really good. You can see with this one they were experimenting with a more non linear adventure.

Very nice looking graphics for Nintendo Zelda game (honestly, no one bought them for graphics)

But honestly, nothing special comparing to the graphics on One or PS4.

I still hope it would be a good game (i played a few of them, except for the 2 most reset ones)    -    however i am not going to buy WiiU for it.

However, if Star Fox is good, I might have to buy Wii U, if only return it, and sell the games after.

Star Fox on super nintendo was my favorite as a kid. Loved them high end polygon graphics
