Dying hard drive?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

1. My 3rd drive is hanging when I browse it's contents or try to transfer files... is it about to die? See attached for what happens when it "hangs" when transferring a large file.

2. I did run a chkdsk /f to fix any issues, It actually seemed better after I did that but not so much now,

3. Assuming it's not dying and this is fixable, any recommendations as to software for checking/fixing disk issues?

Disk: SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

It's about 3.5 yrs old

Thanks much

Could be power issues. I had similar a while ago and thought my 2 HDD's were dying. Until I replaced my PSU.

Whats the health report?

Well I downloaded and installed Seatools.. here are the results:

Now is a good time to make sure you have a current backup of your important data.

Unfortunately, your Seagate product has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read.  Seagate recommends that you run SeaTools for DOS, which has the ability to repair most problem sectors.  SeaTools for DOS may be able to save you from the inconvenience and down time of exchanging the drive.  For more information on this subject see our online FAQ:

I guess I need to figure out how to boot to DOS using a USB since I don't have a CD drive :(

It seems that some people have successfully run SeaTools from a bootable USB drive - this may be something you can try if a CD drive is not available.

That said, be aware that the symptoms you've described are consistent with a hardware failure, so if at all possible, prioritize making backups of important data before attempting any fixes.
