Live streaming games and upload speeds

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I want to get into streaming games on my PC and PS4. So I was wondering what is a good upload speed to have to be able to stream in 720p without and problems?

Thanks!

What upload speed do you have? There isn't really a set speed you need to have, it depends at what bitrate/quality/fps you choose to stream at. As an example I stream at:

720p/30fps: 2500kbps bitrate (~ 3mbit upload required)

720p/60fps: 4000kbps bitrate (~ 4.5mbit upload required)

That's reasonably high quality, I know several people who stream at 720p/30fps with a 1250 bitrate and it's perfectly watchable. Basically any upload speed above 1.5mbit is capable of streaming 720p/30fps in "ok" quality, but obviously if you have a faster connection you would want to increase the bitrate to get "good" quality.

My connection is around 30-50mb/s download and 15-20 mb/s upload and i've never had an issue streaming in HD.

I think it all depends on their servers to be honest..

Since the ps4 and xbox one launch these streaming services like twitch and ustream, their servers have been overwhelmed.

Thanks for the replies.

My current upload speed is: Upload Speed: 2103 kbps (262.9 KB/sec transfer rate). I plan on asking if I can get bumped up to 10mb/s but, the way it sounds I shouldn't really need much over 5mb/s? or should I just go ahead and ask for 10?

Where are you planning on streaming to? Twitch? If so, they consider anything > 3500 kbps bitrate 'abuse' of their servers unless you're a partner, 5mbit should be more than enough.
