Home Based Jobs Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hey All!

Just wondering as this is a Tech site I am willing to bet a lot of us are in Tech Jobs. Do any of you do Home Based or Remote based support as a permanent job. Maybe your "office" is based in an entirely different country. What are your experiences with it?

I have the ability to work from home, as a senior test analyst. I find I get more done than I would in the office, IF I can get my head down and crack on. It's very easy to procrastinate at home.

I don't personally work from home, I imagine I'd get to easily distracted.

Although I had  recently start a job as an "Apple at home Advisor". So far he is loving it and gets nice perks like a free iMac and training.

I've been a software developer for the last 20 years, and been working at home for the last 7 of those.  If you're worried about distractions or procrastination, then you need some discipline--it's not an issue for me.  I'm way more productive at home than I've ever been at an office surrounded by coworkers.

I have a VPN connection into the office, and while it's not fast, it's more than enough for what I need.  I'm using my own hardware, but then, that means I use exactly what I want.

Once a week, I meet at the office (~50 miles away) with the rest of the development team to discuss, face-to-face, who's working on what, what's coming up, customer issues, whether anyone has any blocker, etc.  We have a quick group call with the boss (daily) over Skype, and we Skype each other throughout the day as the need arises.

As for distractions--it's pretty simple, I tell everyone that if they wouldn't come up to me or call me at the office during my regular work hours, then they shouldn't be calling me at home either during that time.

See that's a perfect answer. It would be easier if you had set targets like you did Remote Windows Server/ESXi Support and Support Tickets to do. I am trying to find these jobs because they sound ideal. Most of the jobs offices are like 60 miles away so its not too much of a commute just not every day.

working from home, when i feel like extra cash....I have a large team of freelancers and we band together to do large jobs, primarily I have a single partner but as said me and my partner in development have a large network of friends :P .... we used to get our work from freelancer.com but we now have people constantly asking us to work so no longer needed it (well atleast for now)

I work for one of the four big players.  Have the option of working from home, which like enron I do twice a week.

Wouldn't want to work alone all week to be honest, and video conferencing isn't the same

I am up for a job doing this, Remote 3rd Line support. Lets say its for one of the Major players. I wont say who. What tips would you give me for the interview (Perhaps) given the slant of remote working.

My son also works at home as an Apple at home Advisor.  He's been doing this for a year now, and really likes it! ;)

My office is and has been out of my house for the past 11 years.  I run m own computer repair business. I would say

5% in home repairs (meaning I leave my office)

45% are repairs in my office

50% are remote assistance repairs (most of the time from my couch)

so in my case I work out of my house 95% of the time, all day every day. Though I do leave my house on Friday nights to walk down town and Sunday morning for breakfast at my parents farm house just to get out of the house :)

I always feel annoyed when I have to do an in home service call because I can't be repairing more than 2 things at the same time.

I do work 2/4 times a month from home (I can do more but I don't get a lot done when I am at home). I was this close to take another job and do it permanently from home or or on-site outside of my current job i.e nights and weekends but that didn't work out.

As mentioned if you know that you wouldn't do a lot done from home then don't do it but if that is not an issue then it's a wonderful feeling to not waking up early shower, eat breakfast, take the train or drive. For me all these takes at least 2.5h as I leave a little far from my work. I have other options like taking the faster train but I'd pay double for that, this would save me 30m or max 45m.

What do you do now and what is the job you want to exchange with that requires working from home?

I work roughly 60% at home as the vast majority of my customers are outside of my region.  The other 40%, I'm in the office just to be seen.
