Do any of you do Home Based or Remote based support as a permanent job. Maybe your "office" is based in an entirely different country. What are your experiences with it? I find I get more done than I would in the office, IF I can get my head down and crack on. If you're worried about distractions or procrastination, then you need some discipline--it's not an issue for me. I'm way more productive at home than I've ever been at an office surrounded by coworkers. I have a VPN connection into the office, and while it's not fast, it's more than enough for what I need. I'm using my own hardware, but then, that means I use exactly what I want. Once a week, I meet at the office (~50 miles away) with the rest of the development team to discuss, face-to-face, who's working on what, what's coming up, customer issues, whether anyone has any blocker, etc. We have a quick group call with the boss (daily) over Skype, and we Skype each other throughout the day as the need arises. See that's a perfect answer. It would be easier if you had set targets like you did Remote Windows Server/ESXi Support and Support Tickets to do. I am trying to find these jobs because they sound ideal. Most of the jobs offices are like 60 miles away so its not too much of a commute just not every day. What are your experiences with it? working from home, when i feel like extra cash....I have a large team of freelancers and we band together to do large jobs, primarily I have a single partner but as said me and my partner in development have a large network of friends :P .... we used to get our work from freelancer.com but we now have people constantly asking us to work so no longer needed it (well atleast for now) I've been a software developer for the last 20 years, and been working at home for the last 7 of those. I would say 5% in home repairs (meaning I leave my office) 45% are repairs in my office 50% are remote assistance repairs (most of the time from my couch) so in my case I work out of my house 95% of the time, all day every day. Though I do leave my house on Friday nights to walk down town and Sunday morning for breakfast at my parents farm house just to get out of the house :) I always feel annoyed when I have to do an in home service call because I can't be repairing more than 2 things at the same time. conna 1 Share Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

As mentioned if you know that you wouldn't do a lot done from home then don't do it but if that is not an issue then it's a wonderful feeling to not waking up early shower, eat breakfast, take the train or drive. For me all these takes at least 2.5h as I leave a little far from my work. I have other options like taking the faster train but I'd pay double for that, this would save me 30m or max 45m.
