Gardening

Recommended Posts

Does anybody here raise a garden?  This is only the 2nd year we've tried raising one.  Last year's didn't do so hot, and was a learning experience.  This year's garden has exploded after applying lessons learned last year.  I just posted a blog about it on my Wordpress page, you can check it out and see pictures here.

your garden looks good but bean vines lol

Have you been working on a good compost heap I raise rabbits and used a wormbed for some really good results

this is spearmint from last year one is planted in strait worm poop/bunny poop the other is just some decent dirt however it roasted itself when it ran out of food in that pot

Yes, mainly fruit and veg such as strawberries and tomatoes (both much better home grown than you'll ever get in the shops).

Very relaxing and brilliant when all the hard work put in yields good results :)

Yeah I planted my peas a bit too late, but if I can keep them alive until cold weather they should do much better once it cools off.  I don't have a compost heap, but this fall I plan on going over to my neighbor's house down the road and loading my pickup with horse manure and tilling that into the garden plot and letting it sit over the course of the winter to enrich the soil for next year.

The only thing I learned after trying some gardening is how incredibly inflexible I am, then proceeded to dislocate my shoulder pulling out some weeds.

Looks good  makes me jealous you have some decent looking dirt there way better than the sand I got down here in Florida Do you plan to grow some animals at any point?

I would love to have a farm but I live in the city and I raise Rabbits cuz well thats close enough for me

I've thought about getting some chickens for fresh eggs.  We had chickens when I was growing up.  I can get them pretty cheap at one of the local stock yards, but haven't gotten around to building a chicken house/lot to keep them in yet.  Don't have a huge need to raise a lot of animals here besides chickens because I hunt deer and squirrel every year and that keeps us stocked up with red meat for most of the year.  We've even started seeing a population of wild hogs, so I won't even need to raise those now, just go out in the woods and find one, :P

I'm attempting to make my yard suitable. Like Lizardslap said, the soil is more like sand in Florida :p

Yeah I talk on the CB radio a lot, and lately I've been getting a lot of skip from Florida.  It took me a little while to realize that when people say they are "in the sandpile" they're saying they're in Florida, :P

I have cantalope in the corn field, tomatoes in a container, and flowers in a pot. :shifty:

Part of my  maintenance today involved tying up my tomato plants cause' they've gotten so big they out-grew the original ties I had holding them to their stakes.  In the process of tying them up, found out I have about a dozen little green tomatoes about the size of my thumb-nail, :-)

Grew up on a farm and have gardened all my life. Much of what I learned was summarized in 1977 by James Crockett in this book Crockett's Victory Garden, based on his PBS series. A thick paperback.

It's a guide to PRACTICAL gardening in a KISS (keep it simple stupid) manner. Lots of little tricks, and many big ones. If you could only have one gardening book this would be it.

Crockett used more insecticides than we do today what with resistant hybrids and the like, but the book is organized as a gardening calendar, guiding you month by month as to what should be done to prepare for the next planting, caring for the garden, harvest etc.

We've grown and consumed Garlic, Tomatoes, Zucchini, Eggplant, Yellow Squash, watermelon, Pumpkin, Green Beans,Sunflower (seeds).

I love gardening. I have an avocado and mango growing from seed, along with papaya, banana, pineapple and chayote and tomatoes. I have horrible luck with store bought seeds, I started to dabble in propagation of bougainvillea and plumeria recently, with mixed success. Such a great hobby, but this south Florida humidity is brutal this time of year...

Just picked a little over half of a 5 gallon bucket full of green beans today.  I've been getting this many every 2 to 3 days.  At least we won't run out of green beans this winter, :P

its that time of the year again # summer . where I showcase all my exquisite flowers and fruits that I have been growing since spring. Gardening is fun. The results is also a great achievement if a lot of effort is put into it.

We've got corn, green beans, a little bit of everything, but I won't be showcasing the garden for a little while because it's also got a fair amount of weeds in it until I get some parts to fix my tiller with. Looking forward to seeing yours though if you've got any to share, :-)
