Gotenks98 Posted June 20, 2014 Share Posted June 20, 2014 I have one of those older Linksys routers. I think its a wrtg54. I might have the lettering off. The issue is this router is almost 10 years old and this week it has started to make hissing noises. At first I thought it was a snake or something but now its a constant hiss. I am worried this will catch fire or something before I can replace it at the end of the month. Any ideas as to why its starting to hiss all of a sudden? Keep in mind the room its in is not hot at all, nor is the router itself hot to the touch. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
zhangm Supervisor Posted June 20, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted June 20, 2014 This issue isn't unheard of - a common problem is one or more bad capacitors putting higher voltage across components than they can tolerate. This can cause the affected components to burn out/get hotter than normal. I think the risk of fire is low (but exists) and the most common mode of failure is simply that the router will stop working.
