Why don't most phones have a flash on the front of the phone?

Recommended Posts

I constantly see photos on Facebook of low light, grainy, blurry, terrible, HORRIBLE looking crappy selfies people take with their front facing camera, usually in a bar. Why don't they add a flash to the front of these phones. Personally I will literally turn the phone around  point the back camera at me and feel for the button on the front.

First problem I see with that is the way light would 'milk out' the image being snapped, specially when taking into account the relatively low resolution of some front facing cameras

because normal people take pictures with proper camera

they dont need to take a selfie !       front camera is mostly for skype, in my opinion.

seriously. how hard is it to get someone else to take a picture for you?

i hope they dont add flash to forward cam, as it is just silly.

It's a feature that's popular in some Asian countries as they tend to have larger megapixel camera on the front. Starmobile in the Philippines for example has a few

It'll come eventually I'm sure, although I reckon merely flashing the screen white when you take a photo would have the same effect as it's only ever going to be an arms length away.

Exactly!  Any person with half a brain can take a pic with the back camera quite easily without needing assistance of the screen.

Front cameras are traditionally ###### in quality and are made for high-framerate video to use for video calls. Front cam selfies are fun for Snapchat but shouldn't even be regarded as proper photos. Throw a filter on it and nobody cares what the quality was.

You two might want to step out of your house once in a while and observe modern society.  Selfies are huge with the younger generations, and they often use the front facing camera.

Anyone who wants to take good pictures shouldn't be using a phone to do it. It isn't just the lack of a flash, it is mainly having far too many pixels crammed onto a tiny sensor (because marketing says the more megapixels the better), cheap optics, etc...camera phones will never be able to compare to a real camera.

What is a selfie anyway? Is that just taking a picture of yourself? Why do they call them that?

On the idea of flash on a front facing camera, I do think it'd be helpful but at the same time, why not just turn the phone around and do it? People taking photo's of themselves would probably still take fifty photo's even if they could see themselves on the screen whilst doing it, so I can't see what difference it'd make using the back camera.

The more honest and perplexing question is why all smartphones don't have a flash as standard now.

The flash is too close.  Probably have people saying it made them have vision problems and start suing the phone manfacturers.  Just like anything else that doesn't get used properly and consumers need someone to blame.

Just turn the phone around and hit the button.  It's not that hard.  Plus there are always mirrors they can use...

Is this REALLY a priority with all the other crap in the world?

Oh, I am not arguing for the flash.  I agree its not a good idea.

It wouldn't need to be a full brightness flash.  Maybe just 25% brightness for some fill.

Or wait... why can't the screen flash?  That would provide some fill light.

EDIT:  There are apps that do that.

Snapchat can do that, it's a beta feature in the settings. A full-on flash would indeed be too strong and would make people look like ghosts. Plus, mobile LED flashes are so hard you get crazy ugly shadows.

Yeah... I edited my comment after I found some apps that did it :)

Seems pretty cool... for some extra fill light.

I'm guessing he used the front

This is typically the image quality I see posted on Facebook, though some are worse.

Sounds like you want the Acer Liquid S3.

Front facing flash for those white over-lit selfie goodness.

That is a sexy phone, and I don't normally use the word "sexy" with tech, only human females :)

So you don't blind yourself? You typically hold the phone at a close distance to your face.

How is that any different than turning the phone around and using the back flash? Except with the front flash you can also see how centered the shot is

Eh, selfies are so stupid, I can't wait till this phase dies. You usually use the rear camera at a distance, to take pictures of objects/people. The purpose of the front camera is mainly for video chat (or selfies as the case 99.9% of the time). I personally wouldn't want a bright light 1-3 feet from my face
