When I and my wife had our website, it began climbing up through google simply because of it's popularity

I believe this is the only way to get it noticed, (the amount of traffic, or hits the site gets)

It's called SEO.

You can't (as far as I know) add it yourself. The search engine must crawl your site and it will be added automatically at some point. From there, the more popular your site grows the more infront of search results you will see it.

Here's a little guide.

Yeah you can add pages yourself, here's the page for Google.

If anybody links to your site it'll get picked up by crawlers though, if it's not showing well in search results then it could be due to design flaws (Like sticking text in images, using lots of repetitive keywords can get the site blacklisted, etc.)

If you use Google Webmaster Tools you can submit your sitemap to Google, this will help Google crawl your website better. Submitting your website to Google in the link The_Decryptor posted above would also a good start.

Bing Webmaster Tools would also be a good place to add your site / sitemap to.

The more linkbacks you get from other websites to content on your website, the better you will rank on Google. You need to be creating good quality original content all the time.

If you keep posting good quality, original content, often then Google will perceive your site as been relevant and start ranking you higher. Linkbacks from other websites on the same subject area as your website will help with this too. Linkbacks from spammy websites will only harm you.

These days you don't!! Google (Especially) penalize any excessive SEO. They now beleive everything is "Social" so what its basically saying is that its popular because its popular. Google index the ENTIRE internet every 24 hours. There is NO quick fix despite what anyone says.

You can use that, yeah.

Or start building backlinks and it will eventually get picked up by google and start gettingnoticed.

Like someone said, excessive seo is not good too so be careful with spammy links.

Cheers

Watch out for companies that claim they are SEO "experts." Most of them just spam your links on unrelated sites and can get you delisted on major engines instead of promoted.

Make sure your keywords are concise and valid and use robots.txt for areas you DON'T want indexed.
