Windows 9 might come as a free download, but only to certain users

Microsoft will release a second major Windows 8.1 update this year ? Windows 8.1 Update 2 ? which will be available free of charge to Windows 8.1 Update 1 users, hacker group WZOR has revealed. The group also says that Microsoft will sell Windows 8.1 Update 2 for an affordable price to Windows users who are running earlier Windows versions on their machines and want to upgrade to the latest OS version.

WZOR also revealed that Windows 9 might be released as a free update for Windows users who have Windows 8.1 Update 2 installed, or at a substantial discount. Apparently a decision on the matter has not been made yet. Previous reports from the same source have also indicated that Microsoft?s upcoming major Windows release may be available as a free download.

Finally, WZOR has apparently revealed that Windows 9 Enterprise may have the ability to disable Metro 2.0. The company is expected to have a ?significant? internal event from June 23rd through June 27th, at which point Windows 8.1 Update 2 might receive an RTM Escrow status.

The hacker group said that Microsoft has tightened its Windows security, making leaks nearly impossible ? apparently, employees that want to use the latest builds will get personal Windows copies that will make it easy for the company to track down leakers.

The new security polices around unreleased versions of Windows are apparently targeting Microsoft?s China offices in particular, with the country being a major source of Windows-related leaks in the past.

On a different note, China is apparently a big reason Microsoft is worried when it comes to the Windows 9 launch, following the country?s recent ban on Windows 8 for government computers.

He means when Windows 7 has been retired like Windows XP has already been. Makes perfect sense to me.

Very good news when it comes to personal copies given to employees to test out the new builds, it is about time they do this. Now who is going to lose his job this year or the next? rofl

Yeah and again cripple the internet. Nono, waiting till the last moment surely showed to be the best tactic.

2 minutes and your Windows 8 looks identical to Windows 7.

Rumors are Windows 9 is completely up in the air as China will not use a cloud based, or heavily cloud integrated Windows.

That doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy the benefits of a cloud-based Windows. :)

Which is silly when you can still make a local account. The cloud is optional.

Agreed, though I'm personally not interested (Currently I can't even imagine the benefits of a Cloud-based OS myself). Some are saying the Enterprise edition will not be Cloud-based and allow complete disabling of Modern UI 2.0. Creating these editions will generate a lot of work.

I can definitely understand why many organizations and governments would balk at using a cloud based OS controlled by a private company, Microsoft or anyone else.

I don't know if Government entities who would object care much about it being optional. OSaaS probably won't fly with a lot of autonomous entities.

I'm sure there will be multiple SKUs for those who couldn't care less, and those for whom a cloud-based OS is not an acceptable option.

Who cares about China.

Microsoft and the rest of the sane world.

At this point it's rumor, but do you seriously think if China bans the use of Windows 8.x/9 for whatever reason, that MS can ignore that? Seriously?

If China wants to be little kids, let them. Move on. They're doing nothing but creating drama.

Being a Kid is failing to realize the significance of this. It's a game to enthusiasts, it's global reality to businessmen and women.

BTW, Russia can't be far behind.

How is that? When Americans balked at an always on requirement for game consoles?

what significance? aren't most of china's windows copies pirated anyway?

I probably have as much information about that as you do, none, lol. I suppose we will see if Microsoft addresses this or not. If they believe most of the Chinese government's desktops are running pirated copies of Windows, or that they're are just being childish, and lastly, that it is negligible that they "have" banned the use of Windows 8.x on Government desktops, MS will not change the course of Windows 9 to address this.

China is doing nothing but creating drama. They're chastising a more secure OS over rumors that the NSA can hack into it, yet pirate the hell out of a less secure OS, which a 5 year old could hack into with ease, let alone the NSA.

I highly doubt at this point that Microsoft considers China an ally. China either needs to nut up, and switch to a state sponsored Linux distro, or shut up.

I love an article talking about Windows 9 with a screenshot of Windows 8 Beta or something.  I mean, heck, look at the old tile for the Store!

Ally? Microsoft is not a Country. However they are one of our Country's most important financiers. The assumption by you is, that Microsoft would allow them to switch to Linux, which I believe they would do, or just remain with Windows 7 as they have chosen to do in light of Windows 8.

Zealotry aside, do you really think Microsoft would let China go Linux or even refuse to use future versions of Windows? That's a yes or no question. You may literally believe that, zealotry aside, and if that's the case, then I understand where you're coming from.

What i would like to see is the ability to boot into a OS from the bios to download windows onto your computer. If windows keys are being stored in bio on new motherboards then i should be able to download windows direct from Microsoft when needed.

Which will be everyone, since MS will force the update just like they are for Update 1. This story makes no sense and is just pure speculation with no facts.
