2 men throw out $1M ticket, sue New Jersey Lottery

Recommended Posts

Two New York men are suing the New Jersey Lottery after they threw out a Powerball ticket worth $1 million.

Salvatore Cambria and Erick Onyango, of Suffern, New York, argue in their federal lawsuit that the lottery didn't quickly update its website with the winning numbers from the March 23 drawing.

Cambria tells The Record newspaper he asked Onyango to check the website soon after the 11 p.m. drawing. Cambria tossed the ticket when the numbers didn't match. The men now think the site was showing the previous drawing's numbers.

They say they realized they had won the next day. But by then, their ticket was on its way to a landfill in Canada.

The men say they have two other tickets showing serial numbers that prove they had a winner.

So they throw out the winning one, but kept two others?

Dodgy.

possibly you can pre-purchase tickets i think for future draws? I don't know, but only thing i can thing of a possible explanation if what they claim is true. Then they would be serial coded in purchase order

No lottery site updates the minute new numbers are called, I give them at least an hour or two, this is their own fault and I'm sure it'll get thrown out

Yeah they also pretty clearly show the date of the numbers they display :P

These guys should be billed for the time they're wasting.

I do agree they take too long to update the website... i just don't see why it takes 2-3 hours+

But it's their own fault for throwing away a ticket.. i always keep mine until the next day just incase.

Also, doesn't it clearly say "Numbers from <date>"?

The other tickets could have been winners on the previous draw of a low amount like $1-$2. Why would they throw those away?
