TV or Monitor

Recommended Posts

So, I was looking at getting a 27" monitor. No reason other than wanted a BIG monitor to PC game on, and got to looking at the prices and notice most are around $250-350 average price range. Then I got to looking at 28-32" TV's and notice the price on them are around $149-$299..    They have PC connections with VGA/Audio In.

Which should I get? I mean as far as price goes it seems like a 32" TV sitting on my desk would be cheaper than getting a 24-27" monitor. Not counting I could hook up an xbox or something later "IF" I wanted too..

Are their any pluses or minus's to using a TV over a monitor for gaming?

Cheap TVs won't be proper HD though. If it says "True HD" and also says 1920x1080 then I'd go for the TV, if not then don't

Resolutions aside, keep in mind TVs will never look as crisp and "PC-like" as the monitor. Don't ask me why, i'm not an engineer, must be something with the added circuitry TV's have, even if the panel technology is seemingly the same. But the difference isn't night and day, i used a 24" TV with my PC for years and it was fine. However, these days the two classes are even more the same than ever as you don't really need coax (cable).

This is the monitor i'm using now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236295&cm_re=VE278H-_-24-236-295-_-Product

It's great. Excellent pic quality and has two HDMI ports plus VGA so you can use it as a TV - it also has built-in audio/speakers, so it IS a TV to all intents and purposes, but with clearer image quality for PC.

Here are some things to consider

1) Using a TV as a PC monitor usually results in what is commonly referred to as "Eye bleed". That is were your eyes burn from looking at text or content on a TV that close up

2) Yes you are seeing a lot of 27 inch monitors for $250. Personally I wouldn't buy any of them. The ones going for $250 are 1920 x 1080. Essentially the 27 inch screen has a slightly smaller resolution as a 24 inch. So while yes the 27 is bigger, you are going to be able to fit the same amount (or a little less) on the screen as a 24 inch.

3) That being said, I do have my 70 inch hooked up to a PC which also has a resolution of only 1920 by 1200 (or maybe lightly different). But i'm back far enough so it doesn't look that bad. Eye bleed only occurs if you as close to it as you would be a desktop screen.

4) if you are going to be playing the games front your couch sitting as far as you would normally sit from a regular tv should be ok.

5) If you are planning on playing only games, then sure go for a tv. But if you are planning on using it as a desktop monitor from the same distance as a regular computer monitor, I would advice against going with a TV over a monitor, as eye bleed will most certainly occur.

I have 50" TV and 26/32" TVs are all fine..  No eye bleed.

The reason I get TV instead is because I need TV so I could watch shows/sports.

I can read very small text.. Like you see the small print at the bottom of the newspapers.

AOC is an excellent brand, nothing wrong with going with that one over the ASUS, except Best Buy are not specifying how many HDMI ports it has. If it's got two then you're good to go, as the ASUS has two.

Go with what's been said above. If you're putting it on your desk, go with a monitor.

If you're going to be sitting as far away from the TV while gaming as your would when

watching TV programs, then a TV will be fine.

The "eye bleed' issue sucks. I got myself an HDTV for gaming and put it on my

desk where a monitor would go and started getting BAD migraines. It's a terrible

idea. But my huge, wall-mounted 65" HDTV is great for gaming when no-one

else is home watching TV shows.

The difference in image quality between these two will be marginal if non-existent. Go with VE, the MX series is overpriced and over-designed to my tastes.

The

Asus - 27" IPS LED HD Monitor Model: MX279H SKU: 8767178

Of course this one, not even a question.    The outside looks much better, and the IPS makes a huge difference in the way the colors are displayed (from any angle)

Once you are used to IPS, you never want to use TN panel again.

Any high end laptop is usually IPS, for a good reason. This technology is just better.

I have to say I am loving this monitor. Colors are gorgeous and the size is perfect

So you got the MX? If the price was fine with you, then all good - congratulations on your purchase and glad you're liking the viewing experience!
