Couldn't see a thread about Valiant Hearts yet so thought i'd see if anyone else has been playing this?

I love what Ubisoft has beein doing with their Ubi Art engine lately.  I thought Child of Light was pretty good albeit not completely my type of game however I picked up Valiant Hearts at the weekend and couldn't put it down.

The gameplay isn't exactly taxing; basic puzzles and an emphasis on storytelling rather than combat. But the style and animation is charming and is absolutely packed full of WWI information.  I've found it facinating and has been more of an interacive history lesson as i've learned a huge amount about the war that I didn't know before.

This is one of those games that I actually feel like I will be a slightly better person at the end of it for knowing more about a war which I really should have put more effort into learning about before.

Anyone else playing it? What do you think?

I've been very tempted to buy this game. Everything I have seen of it makes me want to play it. At times it even has a castle crasher feel to it style wise, which is a good thing.

I was kind of holding out for a possible sale, but I may not be able to hold out that long.

Thanks for starting this thread! Bought it day one and love it. Child of Light was great, moved me to tears, and so has Valiant Hearts. Hard to say which is "better", both are very good. The gameplay is compelling, the story is touching, and yes, there's quite a lot of historical background as it was made in cooperation with the centennial project. Let's not forget it's exactly 100 years since the war started, or at least since the archduke was sadly assassinated. One hundred years and the world has changed so much...wonder what people would have made of a PC, PS4, or X1 etc. back in July 1914...

Anyway, the game is highly recommended, very sweet and touching and different. Violence is clearly shown as a horror to be avoided and a waste of lives. The war is depicted as a meatgrinder, but not evil, rather a consequence of the human condition. However, being French Ubi couldn't help themselves so guess what nationality the only antagonist is (he's not that bad though)

Haven't Finished yet, but it is indeed a great game. Especially if you're a war history buff. So far, it's somewhat of a gaming masterpiece. More of an interactive story. Would love to see a WWII era edition. Lots of history lessons here too. I did not know before Gas Masks, a urine soaked cloth was the only defense against Chlorine gas.

The urine mask is quite famous, what surprised me is that the brass literally sent troops into battle with stupid dress uniforms that had glinting buttons and all. It took a couple of weeks and several thousand casualties i imagine before they realized this was a proper modern war with long range weaponry, and that snipers love stuff that glitters and glints in sunlight.

  • 4 weeks later...

Finally got around to finishing this game last night. What an absolutely incredible game.

The last third is brutal. The last quarter especially so.  That ending :/

The game has inspired me to read so much more on WWI.

WW2 games had the same effect on me when they were all the rage 2 generations ago. I was already facinated with WW1/2 already, but games gave me that motivation to then seek out other parts of the war which they didn't cover at all.

That and I'm obsessed with documentaries :p
